Description

PATENTED FEB. 26, 1907.
C. B. CASS. I BED ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED MAY 14, 1906.
THE NORRIS PETERS ca, WASHINGTON. n. c.
CARLTON B. CASS, OF RAVENNA, NEBRASKA.
BED ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed Hay 14.1906. Serial No. 316,679.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLTON B. CAss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenna, in the county of Buffalo and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bed attachment, and has for its object to produce an appliance for preventing children from crawli." g from under or kicking off the bed-covers while sleeping.
A further object is to produce an efficient an 'l reliable anticrawling and antikicking attachment of this character which can be easily and quickly arranged in operative position and which is of simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive construction.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of a bed equipped with an attachment embodying my invention and showing the same in operative relation to a child shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section of the foot member of the appliance. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section taken above the ankle-band. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a modified construction of the ankle-band connection.
In the said drawing, 1 indicates the foot member-of the attachment, constructed as follows: 2 indicates a retractile spring adapted to be connected, as shown at 3 01' otherwise, to the bed-frame, the springs or other fixed part of the bed A, and connected at its opposite end to an internally-threaded cup 4, provided with a ball-race 5, having balls 6 therein. 7 indicates a threaded cap engaging said cup and provided with a ball-race 8, provided with balls 9. 10 indicates a stern journaled in cap 7 and provided with a disk head 11 within the cup and holding the balls 6 and 9 in their respective ball-races, said cup, cap, and stem constituting a swivel. 12 indicates a pair of strips of whalebone, steel, or equivalent material (preferably of material which will not corrode) riveted, as at 13, to the swiveled stem and diverging toward the head of the bed, and said strips 12 are jacketed, as at 14, for a purpose which is hereinafter specified. The jackets are preferably secured to the inclosed stiffeningstrips bystitching, as at 15, or in any other suitable or preferred manner and are of sufficient length to project beyond the free ends of the spring-strips to receive the loops 16, forming the lower members of a coupling of the type common in hose-supporters.
The leg member of the appliance is constructed of wide tape and consists of long straps 17, equipped with coupling members 18 at their lower ends for detachable engagement with coupling members 16, said straps 17 being doubled and provided with slidebuckles 19, engaging the coupling-equipped portions of said straps.
20 indicate metallic or equivalent loops engaging the upper ends of the loops formed by doubling straps 17, secured to the lower ends of the shoulder-straps 21, the rear portions of said straps being connected by crossstraps 22 and the front portions by crossstraps 23, provided with buckles 24, and straps 25, ad ustably engaging said buckles. The adjustment through the medium of the buckled straps 23 and 25 and the lengthwise adjustment by means of the slide-loops 19 permits the appliance to be adjusted to accommodate children of different sizes, the body member being secured on the child in the same manner as the well-known hosesupporters and over the pajamas or other sleeping-garment.
26 indicates bands to fit comparatively snugly around the childs ankles, and said bands are also adjustable by means of buckles 27. These ankle-bands may be provided with loops 28 to fit slidingly over the doubled straps 17, as shown in Fig. 3, but preferably are provided with swiveled loops 29, slidingly engaging said straps 17, as
.shown in Fig. 4, the object being to permit the child to bend his knee with perfect freedom and yet prevent him from raising his feet sufiiciently high to disarrange the covers (not shown) of the bed, the connection with his shoulders preventing him from crawling upward from under the covers The swivel connection in the foot member permits the child to turn over in bed without difficulty, and the retractile connection, which may be of elastic fabric, but preferably is in the form of a-spiral spring, as shown, will cushion any sudden movement of the childs body in order to prevent any sudden jolt or jar which might result from convulsive lunging or movement toward the head of the bed.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced an attachment possessing the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and which may be made of any suitable material or combinations of material desired, and I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be restricted to the exact construction and arrangement of the parts shown and described, as various modifications may be made without departing from the principle of construction involved.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member consisting of an elastic section and a section swiveled thereto, and a body member detachably connected to said swiveled section.
2. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member consisting of an expansive section and a section swiveled thereto and embodying resilient diverging arms, and a body member detachably connected to said arms.
3. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member consisting of an expansive section and a section swiveled thereto and embodying resilient diverging arms, and a body member detachably connected to said arms, said body member being adjustable to increase or diminish its size.
4:. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member consisting of an expansive section and a section swiveled thereto and embodying resilient diverging arms, a body member, and leg members connecting said body member and said arms.
5. An appliance of the character described,
comprising a foot member, consisting of an expansive section and a section swiveled thereto and embodying resilient diverging arms, a body member, and leg members connecting said body member and said arms and adjustable as to length.
6. An appliance of the character described,
comprising a foot member having an elastic portion, a body member, and leg members adjustable as to length and looped to the body member and detachably connected to the foot member.
7. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member, a body member, leg members connecting the foot and body members, and anklebands slidingly mounted on the leg members.
8. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member, a body member having an elastic portion, leg members connecting the foot and body members, and ankle-bands attached to the leg members bearing a swiveled relation to the same.
9. An appliance of the character described, comprising a foot member, a body member, leg members connecting the foot and body members, and ankle-bands slidingly mounted on the leg members and bearing a swivel relation thereto.
10. An appliance of the character de scribed, comprising a foot member having diverging resilient arms, a body member comprising shoulder-straps adjustably connected together, adjustable leg members connecting said shoulder-straps and the arms of the foot member, and ankle-bands connected to the leg members.
1.1. The combination with a bed, of a foot member anchored thereto and comprising two sections swiveled together, a body member, leg members connecting the body and foot members, and ankle-bands carried by the leg members.
12. In a device of the character described, a foot member comprising an expansive section, and a second section having resilient diverging arms and having a swivel relation with said expansive section.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CARLTON B. CASS.
