CAN-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,623, dated June '7, 1892.
Application filed February 4, 1892. Serial No. 420,262. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. FIELD, a
- citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Babylon, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stoppers for cans, jugs, bottles, or other vessels.
The object of the invention is to provide means for retaining the stopper upon the can or vessel when removed from the mouth thereof; and the invention consists in theconstruction and combination ofihe parts, as will be hereinafter fully setforth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the stopper removed from the mouth of the vessel. 2 is a sectional view.

The neck adjacent to its upper end or month has rigidly connected thereto an outwardly-projecting portion orbracket O. \Vhen this bracket is attached to a metallic vessel, it consists of an angle-bar, the extended member of which is perforated at c to receive a U -shaped bolt D. This bolthas its terminal portions bent to lie parallel with each other, and one end has a head (Z formed there on, while the opposite member is screw-threaded, as shown. The screw-threaded portion of the bolt is adapted to be passed through the stopper E, which may be of any suitable material, as cork or rubber; but before being passed through said stopper a disk f, having a screw-threaded aperture, is placed on the upper end of the bolt, and beneath the lower end of the cork and upon said bolt is secured a not It will be seen by this construction that by turning either the diskfor nut g the stopper can be slightly expanded, this being desired where the stopper is to be permanently used.
Then it is desired to remove the stopper, the upper or transverse portion of the bolt forms a convenient grasping portion, and the head (Z will prevent the parts being disconnected.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim 1. In combination with a can or vessel, a U-shaped bolt attached movably thereto, a stopper carried by the threaded portion of the bolt, and a nut adapted to contact with the lower end of the stopper, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a vessel or can, an apertured an gle-plate O, permanently seen red adjacent to the mouth of the vessel, a bent bolt D, having parallel members one of which has a head (I and the other being threaded, a disk f, carried by the threaded member of the bolt, and a nut g and expansible stopper being attached to the bolt between the disk and nut, substantially as shown.
3. In combination with a vessel or can, an apertured an gleplate secured permanently to the neck adjacent to the discharge-opening of the vessel, a bolt D, adapted to be retained upon the can by the apertured angle-plate, said bolt being bent, as shown, and provided with a head (1, the member of the bolt opposite thereto being threaded, a disk f, secured upon the threaded portion of thebolt, a stopper beneath the same, and a nut g, the threaded portion of the bolt passing through the stopper, the parts being organized, substantially as shown, to not only provide means for retaining the stopper permanently to the vessel, but also means for expanding the stopper, and a grasping portion for withdrawing the same.
