TOASTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,884, dated May 31, 1892.

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. MURREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toasters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved toaster comprising skeleton jaws by which Io the initial letters 0f a name, the monogram of a club, the flag of a yacht, or other suitable symbols can be readily produced on the toast while browning the same, so as to impart thereby a more attractive appearance to the toast; and the invention consists of a toaster that is provided with raised teeth in the form of letters or symbols in the face of its holdingjaws, between which letters or symbols the piece to be toasted is held, so that zo Vthe parts not covered by the letters or symbols become crisp and brown, while the parts covered by the letters or symbols are prevented from browning.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 2 5 a face view, open, of a toaster for holding four pieces of toast. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form for holding one piece of toast. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan View of the same on line 3o 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the letters or symbols on the line 5 5 of Fig. l.

Referring to the drawings, ct a represent the skeleton jaws or frames of my improved toaster, which are either connected by means of spring-arms b b, as shown in Figs. 3' and 4t, said arms being embraced by a sliding link 4o c, so as to bring the ends of the jaws in close proximity to each other, or the jaws of the toaster may be made of rectangular frames which are connected by links b', the frames being provided with handles b2, as shown in Fig. 2, or the toaster may be of any other suitable construction.

To the jaws of the toaster are applied 1ctters d, a monogram, or symbols or other devices, which are preferably stamped of flat sheet metal or formed of fiat wire and which 5o are riveted or attached by means of wires to the jaws of the toasters. Both jaws may be provided either with the same letter, monogram, or symbol in such a manner that they register with each other and produce thereby the same impression on both sides of the toast when browning the same, or one letterI may be applied to one jaw of the toaster and the other letter to the other jaw of the toaster, in which case the toast is provided with diifer- 6o ent letters or symbols on its opposite sides.

The attachment of the letters, characters, or symbols to the jaws of the toaster has to be accomplished in such a manner that the attaching rivets or wires do not show any 65 marks on the face of the toast, which can be readily accomplished by providing the letters or other characters with ears or flanges d', that are bent below the level of the face of the letters, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, so that 7o the connecting devices cannot form any mark on the toast.

Vhen using the toaster, the bread is placed between the jaws of the toaster and then held over the fire. The metal of the letters or characters prevents the bread from burning on the point of contact with the same, while the remaining surface becomes crisp and brown, on which the letter or monogram appears in a creamy yellowish color when 8o the toast is removed from the toaster. In this manner great varieties of initial letters, monograms, or othersymbols can be produced, so as to render the toast very attractive.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A toaster comprising skeleton jaws, one of the jaws of which is provided with raised teeth in the form of letters, characters, or 9o symbols, substantially as set forth.
