Description

( No Model.) A UBUERMANN v 81 1111. 7 "No. 272,026. I Patented Feb. 13.1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST BUERMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SPUR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,026, dated February 13, 21883.
Application filed December 5, 1882. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST BUERMANN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of v New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spurs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in spurs having the heel-band and re-enforeing strips and rowel-arms made from sheet metal, cut out and put together so as to stiffen the band and add a new element of attraction to the spur; and it consists in the devices substantially as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan, pa tly in section.
Inm constructionlmake the heel-band A of sheet etal, cut out and bentinto shape, and I sti en this band by auxiliary strips B, lying upon the band, and secured near the ends of this band by the buttons 0 or other rivets, riveting them to the band; or they may be made the whole length of the band. The strips extend back to the rear portion, and are bent out to form the rowel-arms I, having the shouldered rivet D near the i band to hold them firmly to the said hand. To prevent the strips from moving widthwise on the heel portion of the band, I make an outward projec-V tion, E, struck or punched up in the band, and a corresponding projection, I in the strips, the former fitting closely into the inside of the latter and holding the strips in position. Some other device may be. employed for the same purpose and be within the intent of my invention to prevent the stripsfrom sliding widthwise off from the heel portion of the band.
The rowel G is hung in theend of the arms on the rivet-pin H, and oneacli side of the of the chains and balls used on other spurs for the same purpose. r
The mashers will be of acolor differing from that of the rowel, as that the rowel may be brightly polished and the mashers be tempered to a dark-blue or purple color, &c.; or the mashers may be painted or enameled with a color in contrast with the rowel and rowelarms, and this gives a pleasing effect to the eye of the observer when the spurs are worn, and these mashers and rowels may be used in connection with any other form of spurs.
I claim 1. The combination of the heel-band A and re-enforcing strips B, riveted to the endof said band, the two provided with a device to pre vent them from slipping apart at the heel portion, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of bandA and strips B, each provided with projections, as set forth, substantially as and for the purpose named.
3. The combination of band A and strips B, each provided with projections, as set forth, and said strips being bent out at the heel portion to form the rowel-arms Lsubstantiallyas specified.
4. The combination of the band A, strips B, each provided with projections, as shown and described, and rowel-arms I, said arms bein g riveted by shoulder-rivets D, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with rowel-arms I, the rowel G and mashers K, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. An improved spur consisting of the band A, strips B, arms I, rivet D, rowel G, and mashers K, substantially as and for the purpbses specified.
AUGUST BUERMANN.
