PATENT OFFICE.
' PUZZLE KEY-RING- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 783,091, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed April 27, 1904. Serial No. 205,209.
aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRVIN THADEUS ALvoRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant View, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Puzzle Key-Rings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to puzzles; and it has for its general object to provide a simple and entertaining puzzle adapted to serve the additional function of a key-ring and an advertising device.
Other advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my novel combined device complete. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section of the device, taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a detail View, on an enlarged scale, illustrating the detachable puzzle member which I prefer to employ.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, referring to which A is the main or body member of my novel puzzle, and B is thedetachable member thereof. The member A is formed of a single piece of wire, either flat or round in cross-section,
and comprises a central portion a, formed by one whirl or a plurality of whirls arranged close together, as best shown in Fig. 2, and three, more or less, whirls Z, c, and (Z, ar ranged comparatively far apart, as shown in Fig. 1. At its free end the outermost whirl (Z is provided with a hook and in said hook is removably arranged a ring or link f, which is mounted on the whirls c and (Z. Like the body member A the detachable member B is preferably formed of wire, and it comprises, essentially, an open loop g of the proportional size illustrated. The said detachable member B may be provided with any suitable appurtenance or appurtenances in order to increase its utility and the utility of the combined device as a whole and may be of any suitable construction without involving a departure from the scope of my invention. I prefer,
however, to employ a detachable member of the construction illustrated-that is to say, a detachable member comprising the loop g and a swinging piece 7t, pivotally mounted at an intermediate point of its length between the ends of the loop 9 and terminating at one end in a buttou-hook 'Z and at its opposite end in tweezers j, the latter being serrated or roughened on their outer sides in order to enable them to serve the additional function of nail-files. When the detachable member B is removed from the body member A and is to be used as a button-hook, the piece /L is left in the position shown in Fig. 3 relative to the loop g, while when said detachable memher is to be used as a nail-file or to remove splinters or the like the swinging piece it is swung so that its hookz' rests within the loop 9 and the tweezers rest outside the same.
The solution of my novel puzzle involves removing the detachable member from and replacing it on the body member and in the same position as keys and chain. To place the detachable member in engagement with the body member A, the said detachable member is passed through the ring or linkf and manipulated so that its loop g receives all but the outermost whirl of said body member and so that its bight remote from the buttonhook hangs in the same manner as the keys on the outermost whirl c of the series Z), c, and (Z. To remove the detachable member from the body member, the operation just described is reversed z'. c. the detachable member is manipulated so as to move its bight remote from the button-hook from the outermost whirl c of the series along to and through ring f, thence over all whirls except 0 and (Z, and out of ring f, when said detachable member is entirely out of engagement with the body member.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the solution of my novel puzzle requires considerable skill, and hence the puzzle is calculated to afford amusement to both old and young.
As will be readily observed by reference to Fig. 1, the body member A of my novel puzzle is adapted to serve as a ring or holder for keys and other pendent articles, the keys and other articles being strung on the outer whirl (Z of the body member while the ring f is out of engagement with the hook and being retained on the said outer whirl by the ring-f when the latter is replaced in the hook a.
By reason of the keys and other pendent articles being strung on the outer whirl of the body member it will be observed that the said articles will in no measure interfere with the before-described manipulation of the detachable member necessary to place the latter in engagement with and disengage it from the body member.
C C are disks disposed at opposite sides of the central portion a of the body member and clenched, riveted, cemented, soldered, or otherwise connected to said portion a. The said disks may be of metal, wood, paper, composition, or other material or a combination of these and may be provided with pictures, cuts, or advertising matter and may also when desired be covered with celluloid or transparent enamel (indicated by Kt) or with lacquer or varnish. \Vhile I prefer to employ two of the disks C, as shown and described, I desire it distinctly understood that but one disk arranged at one side of the portion a of the body member may be employed without involving a departure from the scope of my invention, also that the disk or disks may be in blank when desired without affecting my invention.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that I have provided a combined puzzle, key holder or ring, and advertising device which is simple and inexpensive in construction and yet highly useful as a key-ring and advertising device and calculated to aiford considerable amusement as a puzzle.
1 have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described comprising a body member having whirls, and also having a hook at the free end of'the outermost whirl, and a ring mounted on next to the outer Whirl of the body member and adapted to be placed in and removed from the hook of said body member.
2. In an article of the character described, the combination of a body member having whirls the outer one of which is provided with means for receiving and holding a ring, the said ring mounted on next to the outer whirl of the body member and arranged to be placedv in and removed from the said ring-holding means of the outer whirl, and a detachable member comprising a loop extending through the ring and receiving all but the outer whirl of the body member.
3. In an article of the character described, the combination of a body member having whirls, and also having a hook at the free end of the outermost whirl, a ring mounted on next to the outer whirl of the body member and arranged to be placed in and removed from the hook of said body member, and a detachable member comprising a loop extending through the ring and receiving all but the outer whirl of the body member, and one or more appurtenances on said loop.
4. As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described comprising a body member having a central portion, and whirls surrounding said central portion, and also having a hook at the free end of the outermost whirl, a disk arranged on and connected to the central portion of the body member and adapt ed to bear advertising or other matter, and a ring mounted on next to the outer whirl of the body member and adapted to be placed in and removed from the hook of said body member.
5. As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described, comprising a body member formed of wire and'having a central portion formed by one or more whirls, and
whirls surrounding the central portion and arranged comparatively far apart, and also having a hook at the free endof the outermost whirl, a ring mounted on next to the outer whirl of the body member and arranged to be placed in and removed from the hook, and a disk or disks arranged on and connected to the central portion of the body member, and adapted to bear advertising or other matter.
6. As an article of manufacture, a device of the character described comprising a body member having a central portion, and whirls surrounding said central portion, and also having a hook at the free end of the outermost whirl, a disk arranged on and connected to the central portion of the body member and adapted to bear advertising or other matter, a ring mounted on next to the outer whirl of the body member and arranged to be placed in and removed from the hook, and a detachable member having a loop extending through the ring and receiving all but the outer whirl of the body member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IRVIN THADEUS ALVORD.
