UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR P. BENJAMIN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TROUSERS-PROTECTORn SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,749, dated May 31, 1892.
Application filed .Tuly 1l, 1891.
.T @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR P. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers Attachments for the Use of Bicyclists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in attachments for bicyclists trousers, and has for its object toprovide an attachment capable of being applied to the inside of the inner side of the trouserslegs and at the bottoms thereof and provided with fastening devices adapted to be secured around the ankles of the wearer in such manner that the trousers are held in their natural shape and at the same time maintained in such position as to be free from liability of engaging or becoming entangled in any portion of the Vmachine and thus injuring the rider or tearing or soiling the trousers.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel device hereinafter fully described, and
afterward pointed out in the claim, due reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a perspective View of my irnproved device as viewed from the inner side, and Fig. 2 a similar view showing the device in position to be applied to the leg of a wearer.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates a curvilinear band of spring-steel of a shape adapted to conform to the shape of the bottom of the trousers-legs. The ends of said curved band A are bound with any suitable material, as at c a, to prevent the trousers being cut. To the inner side of the band A are secured by rivets or otherwise straps B B, and said straps may be of elastic or inelastic material, as preferred. One of the straps, as is provided with a buckle ZJ, by means of which said strap may be secured about the ankle of the wearer; butin lieu thereof a button-hook or clasp may be substituted for the buckle and a button hole or holes may be Serial No. 399,143. (No model.)
formed in the strap B, or any other wellknown way of fastening straps may be einployed. To the inner side and near each end of the band A are secured loops O, through which the ends of the straps B B are passed when the device is not in use.
In attaching the band A to the trousers said band may be passed or slipped from the inside through the seam or hem of the trousers at the bottom thereof and upon the inner side of the trousers; or said band may be covered with cloth and secured by means of sewing through the edges of the cloth covering` to the trousers after the well-known manner of securing corset and dress stays in place or in any other suitable manner.
I have described the band A as being constructed of tempered steel; but I may construct the same of wood, whalebone, or any material suitable for the purpose.
When applied to the trousers-legs as above described, the straps B B are fastened about the ankles of the wearer, which causes the inner sides of the bottoms of the trousers-legs to hug or embrace the inside of the ankles and out of the way of all liability of engaging or becoming entangled in any part of the machine, while at the same time the trouserslegs will be maintained in their normal or proper' shape. e
By the use of my device the trousers'are not folded or creased, as is the case with the well-known clips nowin use, nor is the device visible, and when not in use the ends of the straps B B may be passed through the loops C, when the presence of the device would not be suspected.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A trousers-protector consisting of a curved spring-band having ankle-straps secured to the concave surface thereof near its central portion, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR P. BENJAMIN. Witnesses: SIMON W. HATHEWAY, P. B. RosINAN.
