No. 602,299. Patented Apr..12, 1898.
UNITED STATES YPATENT OFFICE. f
GILBERT c. BLANE, on WINDSOR, ENGLAND.l
ATTACHMENT FOR OVERALLS, LEGCINGS, TROUSERS, SLC.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,299, dated April 12, 189s. Application iiled October 23, 1897. Serial No. 656,201. (llo model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, GILBERT GORDON BLANE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Foliejon Park, Windsor, in the county of Berks, England, have invented an Attachment for Overalls, Leggings, Trousers, and Like Coverings for the Legs, of Which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide, in connection with overalls, leggings, trousers, and like coverings for the legs, an attachment which is either permanently secured or temporarily attachable to the parts of the overalls, leggings, trousers, or like coverings most exposed to Wet in rainy weather-for instance, the front portion of the upper part of the leg in the case of the riders of cycles,
The attachment according to my invention consists of a piece of waterproof fabric or material which may be single or doubled and which is provided With means by which it canl be attached to the article with which it is to be used-such, for example, as buttons or straps or a Web Or the like on the under side of the said piece, by which it can be secured to the overalls, leggings, or trousers by sewing or otherwise-so that the edges or outer parts of the said attachment remain loose or unattached, and the said piece of waterproof fabric or material is consequently not stretched tightly across the leg, but lies upon it in an unstretched condition most favorable for repelling rain. The connection may be effected so that the attachment is either perman ently in place or so that it can be removed when not required for use-for example, by hooks and eyes or buttons and buttonholes or other suitable fastenings.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents an attachment made in accordance with my invention, the side seen being the under side. Fig. 2 shows it in place upon a leg. Fig. 3 shows one leg of a pair of overalls provided with fastenings for securing the said attachment thereto, it being understood that a similar attachment is used for each leg.
A isa piece of waterproof material. 1, 2, and 3 are elastic or other straps provided at each end with tabs having buttonholes therein.
B is a piece of stiffening material secured at the outer end of the piece A. One end of each strap l, 2, and 3 is secured to a button a on the piece A. The strap l is to be buttoned at its other end to a brace-button on the trousers or the like, and the straps 2 and 3 are to be passed under the leg and buttoned to buttons o? on the Opposite side of the piece A'. The strap 4 is provided with a button at each end and is also passed under the leg and secured at each end to one of each of the pairs of tabs b h2, xed tothe piece A. The attachment may'thus be Worn, for example, upon an ordinary -pair of trousers, as shown in Fig. 2, the stiffening-piece B causing the end to project beyond the knee and keepingit from being raised by the Wind.
In Fig. 3 I show a manner of attaching my improved covering to overalls or any article of clothing that will not be distgured by sewing buttons thereto or forming buttonholes therein. This drawing shows but one leg of that style of overall in which each leg is separate from the other and drawn on by the wearer over one leg entirely independent of the other.
A short distance above the knee I sew or 4otherwise attach to the overall buttons c2 c2,
I do not limit myself to the arrangement ofv fastenings shown in the drawings, as any other suitable arrangein ent of fastenings can be used.
Any ordinary cape or covert-coat worn with the attachment described will effectuallyprotect the rider in rain, while he will be free in all his movements.
Having nonr particularly described and as- IOO An attachment for overalls, leggings, trousers and like coverings for the legs, consisting of a piece of flexible Waterproof fabric or materiaha stiened outer` end thereto adapted to project beyond the knee when the lattei` is bent, and means for attaching said piece to the article to be protected, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 1o two subscribing Witnesses.
GILBERT G. BLANE.
