UNITED v PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS W. TULLY, 01E BROOKLI'N E, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARMENT. I a
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. TULLY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State ofMassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to garments and especially to means for preserving the loose, full or blouse effect of a tubular sleeve, knickerbocker-leg or the like without having to relyupon a tight closur or strap around a limb of the wearer. I y i p Heretofore such-tubular portions of garments of the class referred to have been provided with an end finish, strap or cuffadapted to be fastened tightly as atthe wrist or above the knee of the wearer, the loose material of'the tubular main part ofthe garment falling over the part so tightened upon the wearer. Good appearance of the garment necessitates this. relation of its parts, which is difficult to maintain without fastening the cuff part so tightlyas to be uncomfortable or toimpede circulation. Objects of the present invention are to'provide a simple, inexpensive and effective support for such garments enabling the free part of the tubular sleeve or leg to hang over the end part without dependence upon tightness of the end portion on the arm or leg, and toprovide for adjusting the support.
The invention will be described in connection with a specific embodiment in a pair of knickerbockers or boys trousers, but it will be understood the devices so described and shown are typical species only of the genus from which they are selected as an illustrative instance.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a front view of a pair of knickerbockers illustrating one embodiment of th invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating another embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 3 is a similar view parts being broken away of the garment shown in Fig. l as it appears when in position on the wearer; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail in vertical section.
Referring now to Fig. 1, each leg portion 1 of the garment is provided. with a support referably made as a tape, cord, or string 2 astened, as by sewing, to the inner surface well above the bottom end of the garment, for instance being applied as shown at the Specification of Letters Patent.

upper part of the inner longitudinal seam. The lower and free ends of each of the tapes 2 are carried through a vent, eyelet, or button-holed opening 3. The supports are preferably flexible and inelastic, but may be made of elastic tape if desired. 7
The bottoms of the trouser legs terminate in the usual strap 4 or other end-finish, cuff or. closure. Whatever the construction of the finish, cuff or closure, a fastener such as a button 5 sewed ibtithe cloth maybe provided on each leg-underneath the opening 3.
As shown in Fig. '3 when the closur 4 has been. clasped about the leg the support 2 is wound or tied 'aboutithe fastener 5, the position of the closure ion the leg of the wearer being thereby fixed without unduly tightening said closure against slippage, and especially against slippage relatively to the lloloused-ov'er bottom parts 6 of the trouser egs.
Instead of or in addition to the supports 2 on the inner side of the trouser legs, supports 7, Fig. 2, conveniently attached to the inside of the garmentas at the outer longitudinal seams, may be employed. The construction of the supports 7 may be the same as that of the supports 2 above described, and the fastener for the supports 7 may be the same fastener, such as the button 8, relied upon for the leg-end fastening means such as strap 10, or the supports 7 may be tied around thestrap 10. No separate opening 3 is necessary for the supports 7 which may be attached to the fasteners 8 by bringing them out through the usual vents 9 in the legs of the trousers.
As illustrated in Fig. 4 the supports 2 or 7 instead of being adapted to be wound or tied about a fastener such as the button 8 may be provided with a series of buttonholes 11 thereby to be adjustably fastened to the buttons 8 at the bottom of the trousers to maintain the closure in lace.
As illustrated in Fig. 3 it is not necessary to provide separate supports 2 for each leg of the trousers, and in some cases a preferred construction comprises a single tape, cord or other support 2 attached at 14 to the gusset or center seam in the crotch of the garment. While the fasteners for the free ends of the supports have been shown as buttons, thisis illustrative only, any other desired form of fastening, such as a buckle, friction-clasp, snap-clasp, or a piece of tape adapted to be tied to the support, being and taken off, and as many of the supports as desired may be distributed around the 15 ends when the ends are sition, characterized by supports extending between the exterior. of the ends and points within thetubular portions above-a relaxed comprehended within the intended con struction for this purpose in the specified relation. It will also be apparent that the support may in some cases be attached to the end of the tubular portlon ofthe garment and adjustably attached by vany of the above-mentioned means at its anchorage within the garment and above the end tobe supported Without departure fron'rthe, in vention. V v y I e Once adjusted, the supports 2 or need not be altered when the garment. is put on end intended to be held in place thereby Without departing from the invention 101mm: i 1. A garment of the class' having rela tivelyloose tubular porti ons terminating in ends adapted to be fitted -closelytthe' tubular blouse over said portions being adapted ted in normal pogatesupports attached to the inside of the garment'above said depending parts, said garment having means adjustably to fasten said supports to the cuifs, said supports and fastening I means being accessible while on the wearer for adjustment to retain the cuffs.

A nether garment having-legs, a support Withinthe garment extending over the v crotch and downwardly within the legs, and means for securing the support to the ends of the legs to hold up the ends of the legs independently of the support afi'orded by' the garment legs or by binding contact with the wearer.
