N. PEARSON. STO-VEPI] ?E ATTACHMENT.
Patented May 17,1892.
UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
HARRIET N. PEARSON, OF CORSICANA, TEXAS.
STOVEPIPE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,149, dated May 1'7, 1892.
Application filed December 19, 1891. Serial No. 415,578. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET N. PEARSON, of Corsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe Attachments; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in stovepipe attachments; and it consists of a receptacle formed in two parts, which are secured together around the stovepipe just below the point where the latter enters the chimney immediately above the stove.
The object of my invention is to construct an attachment which may be readily secured to or detached from the pipe for the purpose of catching any dirt or soot which may drop from the chimney, thus preventing it from reaching the stove.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing my improvement in position on a stovepipe. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the same.
In constructing my improved device I employ two semicircular bottom portions A, which are provided with upwardly-extending flanges B on their concave edges and flanges O on their outer or convex edges. The adjacent ends of the flanges B C are connected by a short strip D, as shown, so that each section of the receptacle or pan forms a complete inclosure. These members are hinged together at one side, as shown at E, and upon their opposite ends is formed a catch or securing device F. The circular opening inclosed by the flanges B is the same size as the pipe to which the device is secured, so that any soot or dirt dropping from the chimney will be caught in its descent by the receptacle.
When the device is to be applied to a pipe, the sections are opened, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it may be placed around the pipe and adjusted to the desired position.
In order to hold the device securely on the pipe, I employ two U-shaped clasps G, which engage the flanges B at the points where the said flanges meet on opposite sides of the pipe, as shownin Fig. 1. By this means the said flanges are brought tightly against the pipe and made to bind'it sufficiently to securely hold the device in the desired adjustment.
The great advantage derived from constructing the sections as independent pans is that when a quantity of soot has accumulated in them they can be released and removed from the pipe without spilling the matter contained in them. If the inner flange B were dispensed with, the soot would drop from the receptacles as soon as they were released from the pipe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a stovepipe attachment, the combination, with the pipe, of a receptacle formed of two sections hinged together at one end, their inner edges being formed concave, flanges extending entirely around the said sections, and a means for securing them at their free ends, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a stovepipe attachment, the combination, with the pipe and the receptacle-sections having flanges on their meeting edges, of clasps adapted to engage the said flanges, for the purpose substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRIET N. PEARSON.
