UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. SMITH, OF LIN NEUS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO RICHARD JEWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
sTovEPlPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,316, dated May 30, 1893.
Application filed December l0, 1892. Serial No. 454,732. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linneus, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Stovepi pe, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in stove pipes.
The object of the present invention is to improve theconstruction of stove pipes, and to enable soot to be removed from atlue or chimney Without necessitating the removal of a stove pipe orinterfering with the fire of the stove.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a stove pipe constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in connection with a flue or chimney, the latter being in section. Fig. 2is a longitudinal sectional view of the stove pipe. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the cap. Fig. 4 is a similar View of the inner end of the stove pipe.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a stove pipe designed to be arranged horizontally aud adapted to have its inner end 2 inserted in a stove hole of a chimney or liue 3 in the usual manner. The inner end 2 of the stove pipe is provided at the top with an opening 3, and has an upwardly inclined rear Wall 4 which is curved in horizontal section, fand which is adapted to form a detlector or chute to direct soot falling into the opening 3, to a discharge opening 5 iu the bottom of the stove pipe. The upper edges of the opening 3 are curved at 6 and are slightly inclined or truncated at the back at 7. Thel discharge opening 5 is arranged outside of the flue or chimney 3, and is provided with a depending flange 8 adapted to receive a detachable cap 9 to close the discharge opening. The cap is substantially cylindrical and is provided at opposite sides with bayonet slots l0 -engaging laterally extending lugs or projections 1l of the depending flange. The bottom of the cap is provided with a handle.
It will be seen that the'stove pipe is simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to catch soot falling in the due, and that it will enable the. soot to be readily removed, thereby dispensing With Hue cleaners and obviating the necessity of taking down a stove pipe and extinguishing a fire when it is desired to remove soot from a chimney or Hue.
I desire it to be understood that changesin the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What I claim is- A stove pipe designed to be inserted in the stove hole of a chimney, with a closed rounded inclined end Wall resting against the outer wall of the chimney or iiue and having the truncated portion 7 and provided with curved edges 6, whereby an opening is formed at the top of the pipe the entire width of the chimney or flue to catch the soot thereof, said pipe being provided outside of the chimney a short distance from the inclined Wall with a discharge opening, arranged in the bottom of the pipe and adapted to have the soot directed through it by said inclined wall, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
