SASH-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,557, dated April 26, 1892. Application filed March 1, 1892. Serial No. 423,401. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM HENRY LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing atDenison, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sash-fasteners; and it has for its object to provide a simple and efficient and at the same time cheap and durable sash-locking device which will serve to automatically lock the sash at any desired height. The device is ornamental in appearance, of few parts, and will not be likely to get out of order.

To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consistsin the peculiarconstruction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanyingdrawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a window frame and sash, showing my locking device applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view in perspective of the hinged locking-plate. Fig. 3 is asection upon the line on 00 of Fig. 1 upon large scale.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the window-frame, to which is secured the block B, to which is hinged a locking-plate (l, which plate is by the tension of a spring D held normally in contact with the face of the side rail E of the sash.

The locking-plate (J is provided at its outer edge with a cutaway portion 0 to permit the said plate to be readily withdrawn from contact with the sash against the, tension of the spring D when it may be desired to release the plate from its engagement with the sash, as will be presently explained.

The locking-plate O is provided upon its wardly, as shown at d. I deem it important that the recesses D be upon the near face of the plate 0, whereby the screw-heads are concealed when engaged in said recess.

The sashsrail E is provided at intervals with screw heads or lugs E, which are arranged in a vertical row in the path of the locking-plate, as shown.

The operation of the device is simple and at once understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that the plate 0 will be normally held by the action of its spring against the face of the sashrail. The sash being raised will move freely until the first adjacent screw-head or lug E enters the recess D in the lower end of the locking-plate, where it will be retained by the plate and the sash thus secured against farther downward movement. The engagement of the lugs or screw-heads E with the recesses at the upper end of the plate will in a like manner lock the sash against upward movement. Then it is desired to release the sash, itis readily accomplished by simply raising the plate C from its engagement with the face of the sash, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the windowframe and the sash provided with thelugs or projections upon the outer faceof one of its side rails, the block B, the plate O,hinged at one of its side edges to the said block and having its under face provided with recesses concealed from the front opening at the ends of the plate, and the spring D, interposed between the frame and plate and secured to the plate and block and serving to normally hold the latter in contact with the outer face of the side rail of the sash in line with the lugs or projections thereon, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
