Description

w. w. EWING,
DOOR SEUURBR No. 473,305. Patented Apr. 19, 1892.
, or eccentric heads E are preferably integral with the lever-arms and are placed one upon each side of the plate 0, so that one of the cams will engage the face of the door and the other the face of the door jamb or frame, whereby a pressure upon the outside of the NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM W. EWING, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,305, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed January 4, 1892.
T00 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WV. EWING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, as set forth in the accompanying; drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my doorsecurer in position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same detached.
My invention relates to means for securing doors and analogous structures against being opened byintruders and those not entitled to access to the premises; and my invention consists of the construction and combination of devices forming the improved securer, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to which m yinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and indicate the manner in which the same is carried out.
In the said drawings, A represents a door, window, or analogous device, and B is the jamb orframe of the same, both of which may be of the usual or of any well-known construction. To this door the securer is fastened, so that when the door is closed and the securer in position itwill be practically impossible to open the door from the outside. This securer consists, essentially, of a plate 0, having one end 0 bent and adapted to be driven into the inside of the jamb or frame B, so that when the door is closed it abuts against the plate to hold it against displacement. If desired, the bending of the plate may be dispensed with and the plate held by screws or nails Without departing from the spirit of my invention. This plate projects from the plane of the face of the door and extends into the room or apartment farenough to furnish a bearing for the cams or eccentric heads E of the levers D, which are secured to said plate by a bolt F, passing eccentrically through the head or cam and plate and secured by a nut cl. The cams Serial No. 416,955. (No model.)
door is resisted by the cam on the inside of the same and further resisted by the opposite cam bearing against the door-jamb. From the cams or eccentric heads extend the leverarms D,by which they are operated, and these levers carry at their lower ends suitable bells G, which are caused to vibrate and ring an alarm when the door is moved, and thereby warn theinmates of the house of the presence of intruders on the outside. Through the cams or eccentric heads holes e are made to receive a pin f, by which the two cams are held together, and said pin by engaging the edge of the plate 0 prevents the cams being turned from the outside and also enables the levers to be adjusted to difierent positions and the device to be applied to doors of different thicknesses.
To release the door, the cams are thrown back until their short sides are presented next to the door, when a sufficient space is left to permit the door to open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a door-securer, a plate fitted between the door and its casing or frame and projecting inwardly, in combination with two cams or eccentrics fulcrumed to the inner end of said plate, one upon each side, and having projecting arms or levers by which they are moved, substantially as herein described.
2. In a door-securer, a plate adapted to be secured between the door and its frame or casing and projecting inwardly, the cams or eccentric heads fulcrumed to the inner end of said plate, one upon each side, and adapted to bear on the door and door-frame, respectively, and levers or arms projecting from the cams and provided with bells, which sound an alarm when the cams are moved, substantially asherein described.
3. In a door-securer, the supporting-plate with its cams or eccentrics adapted to bear one upon the door and the other upon the frame thereof, said cams having holes adapted to receive a pin for locking and adjusting them, substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM W. EWING.
