Specification of Letters Patent.

To aZZ whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC M. DEPPEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a sash-fastener, and has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient device for locking both the top and bottom sash at any desired elevation; and to this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a part of the Window casing and sashes with the fastener in place. Fig. 2 is a face View of the fastener removed, and Fig. 3 is a back View thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 denotes the pulley-stile of the window-casing; 6, the inner sash, and 7 the outer sash; 8, the inner stop, and 9 the outer stop.
A face-plate 10 is mortised into the stile 5 and secured thereto by screws or other suitable fastening means 11, and behind the plate the stile is recessed, as at 12. The fastener comprises two angle-levers, the arms 13 of which extend behind the face-plate and Within the recess 12. A catch 14 extends outwardly from each of the arms 13. The face-plate is apertured at 15, through which the catches 14 are adapted to be extended into recesses 16 in the edges of the sashes, one of the catches being for the upper sash and the other catch for the lower sash. The arms 17 of the anglelevers extend through an opening 18 in the face-plate and through an opening 19 inthe inner stop 8, and the free ends of said arms are formed with buttons 20. The arms 17 are notched, as at 21, to receive studs 22, projecting from the wall of the opening 18 and which form the fulcrum on which the anglelevers swing. Pressure on the buttons 20 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 withdraws the catches 14 from the recesses 16 and unlocks the sashes.
The face-plate has a rearwardly-projecting flange 23, extending into the recess 12, an
each of the arms 13 has a rearwardly-extending branch 24. Springs extend between these parts and actuate the arms 13 to automatically force the catches 14 into operative position. Studs 26 formed on the parts 23 and 24 serve to hold the springs in position.
The fastener is located midway between the top and bottom of thewindow-casing, which permits the parts to be placed close together without interfering with the independent operation of each of the catches 14. The buttons are placed close together, so that they can be manipulated simultaneously,if desired. To prevent lateral play of the fasteners, the back of the plate 10 has lugs 27, between which the fasteners work.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sash-fastener comprising an apertured plate adapted to be secured to the window-casing, and having a projecting flange on one end thereof, an anglelever, one of the arms of which extends behind the plate and has on one side a catch passing through an Opening in said plate and engageable with the sash, and on the opposite side a laterally-extending branch, the other arm of the lever extending through one of the apertures in theplate and fulcrumed on the wall of said aperture, a spring between the aforesaid flange of the plate and branch of the lever.
2. A sash-fastener comprising a plate secured to the window-casing and provided with an opening having a stud projecting from the wall thereof, and an angle-lever, one of the arms of which extends behind the plate and has a catch engageable with the sash, the other arm of the lever extending through the opening in the plate and having a notch to receive the aforesaid stud which forms the fulcrum of the lever.
