GAME APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,114, dated April 19, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES WHITE HALE, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This is a game apparatus constructed and adapted to provide means for playingagame similar to the old-fashioned game of stickknife, and the principal objects are, first, to enable the player to exercise his skill without any possibility of danger to himself, and, second, to enable the game to be played in as well as out of doors and withoutany liability of injury to a room (or the contents thereof) in which the game is played.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of referenceindicatelike parts, Figure 1 is a plan View of the game apparatus with the tool which is a substitute for the stick-knife in the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line ac, Fig. 1. Fig.4 represents side views of the stick-knife in different positions. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a slightly-modified form of the stickknife. Fig. 6 is an end view of the stickknife, looking at it from the right in the position illustrated in Fig. 2.

A, A, and A represent, respectively, the bottom, sides, and ends constituting a tray or Within this tray'is laid longitudinally a series of deep U-shaped metallic troughs B. These troughs are laid side by side with their bottoms B"downward,preferably close together, and are capable of being somewhat compressed, owing to the spring of the material of which they are constructed. They are kept in place by the end plates 0, which are secured to the tops of the ends A", and, being slightly wider than said ends, overlap the ends of the troughs, and thus confine them. It will readily be seen that when these troughs are in position the effect is to provide a series of grooves or narrow spaces a, each of which is produced by the open upper side of a trough.

The tool with which the game is played,

and which I term in this specification a stick-- knife, consists of a piece of metal bent substantially at right angles into the shape of a knife used for playing the old-fashioned game of stick-knife. The portion D of the stickknife has ablunt end D, and the portion E thereof has a sharp end E.

The game is played by casting the stickknife so that the sharp end E will stick into the grooves a at various angles, as desired. The upper surface or back of the portion D may be flat, if desired, so that the stick-knife may rest n p011 that surface with its end E up.

Some of the ordinary positions assumed when the game is played are shown in Fig. 4.

In order to facilitate the placing of the stick-knife with the back of its portion D resting on the troughs, especially if such portion is not fiat, a pin or blade d may project from such portion, as shown in the modification Fig. 5.

Having thus fully described my invention,

1. A game apparatus comprising a series of troughs or U shaped plates B, laid side by side, with their open sides up, within a suitable tray or frame, substantially as set forth.

2. A game apparatus comprising a frame or tray, as A A A", a series of troughs or U- shaped plates B, laid side by side within said tray and with their open sides up, and strips or plates 0, secured to the tray so as to overlap the ends of the troughs, substantially as described.

3. In a game apparatus, the combination of a series of troughs or U-shaped plates B, laid side by side, with their open sides up, in a suitable tray or frame, and the tool or stickknife D E, provided with sharpened end E, substantially as set forth.
