CRlBBAGE-BOAR D;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,070, dated m 22, 1900. Application flied une 26, 1899. Serial No. 721,985. (No model.)
To alZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL WHITMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cribbage -Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to-bea full, clear and exact description of said in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains to make,- use, and practice the same.
This invention relates to improvements in games, and more particularly to cribbageboards. i
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a cribbage-board constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side or edge View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the end of the holder for the counting-pegs with which the board is provided, the end of the board being shown in dotted lines. Fig.4is a similar view of an alternative construction. Fig. 5 is a plan View of one of the joiningstrips for securing the sections of the com-' pleted board together. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of'a pack of cards, havingasection of the board on each side ofthe pack, the whole being in position to receive. the containing-case or retaining-band.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a cribbage-board so constructed to the size and general shape of a card that the two halves of such board are separated and used'as a cover for the pack of cards; further, to provide a simple and efficient means of uniting the two halves to form a completed 1 board which may not be drawn apart and which will preserve a level surface, and, further,to provide holders for the counters which are simple and efiicient and do not increase the dimensions of thickness of the combined pack and board-sections when the same are assembled, as shown'in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
With these objects in view the invention consists in constructing from thin wood or other suitable material the half-sections A A. Each section is provided with one-half the necessary cribbage-counting perforations B B, as shown at Figs. 1 and 6. Each section is constructed to the size and form of the cards constituting the pack, for which the board is intended to serve as a cover. The sections strips are constructed of metal and are perforated at C to receive a pin 0 which is driven through the board, as shownin Fig. 1. The strips 0 are mounted in slots C, formed by saw-cuts in the edge of the sections, and are of sufiicient length to permit the strips to be folded back and rest entirely within the slot, as shown at Figs. 2 and 6.".When thus folded, the straight edge with which the strip sections. At the end of the slot; there is pro vided in either the upper or lower wall of the slot a recess to receive the hook-like extension 0 with which the strip is provided for the purpose of preventingthe separation of the sectionsin alinear direction. The extensions C also extend slightly above the board to aiford a handle by which the strips 0 may be thrown outward fromthe containingslots. For convenience each section is provided with one of the strips 0, and each section is provided with a short slot 0 in the opposite edge of sufiicientlength to receive the strip (1 when the'sam'e is thrown forward to join the sections A A. In this position of the strips 0 the extensions 0 rest in recesses provided in the ends of the slots 0 as shown at Fig. 1. In this position also the outer edge of the strip extends slightlybeyond the edge of the board to permit the strips to be pressed firmly in position. When thus united, the sections A and A are held perfectly level by reason of the straight strips C lying snugly in the alined slots 0 and w. The sections are prevented from becoming disnnited by theextensions G. Each section is provided with a peg-holder D at the outer end thereof. This consists of a round receptacle slightly shorter than the width of the sections- A A, into which the pegs are inserted and held. In the form shown in Fig. 3. the holder is constructed from metal, which is rolled on itself to form the cylinder D, one edge of which is free to produce a spring-pressure on the peg when the same .is forced into the end, as shown at Fig. 1. The cylinder is provided with the extension D, which is inserted into a fine saw-cut slot in the end of the sections, and
thereby held on the board. This for many reasons is the preferred construction; but I do not wish to limit myself to such construcare united by the joining-strips C. These" is provided rests flush with the edge of the 3 V I travelers who desire toeconomize space. Also tion, as any receptacle added to the end of the sections would serve the purpose-for which this is intended.
In some instances I con- 7 struct the holders from leather or fabric in the form shown at Fig. 4, where the material is illustra'tedas' lapped over the. end of the; section, which is rabbeted to receive it, toform the receptacle or holder D. In some in'-- stances the sections are constructed so thin holdersD overhanging the end of the pack, j
as to necessitate that the holder shall be of larger dimensions than the thicknessiot the sections tohold the pegs. In these instances 'the holder is attached to the section in such; manner'as to throw the holder beyond the in er side of the section, although said holder remainsfiush with the outer side orgfaceof By this means the sections may as shown at Fig. 6, to avoid increasing the.
dimension in thickness vof the assembled pack and sections.
Q The assembled cards and sections maybe held together by an elastic band or placed in a containing-casesimilar to the presentcard- -case. =If'bound by the elastic band, the 'sec tions A and A serve to protect the cards as 300V612' I W as described are desirable, particularly'to' .tions arranged for cribb'age counting-and.pro-.
:having a hook-like extension toprevent the 'separationof the sections by engaging the separation of the sections by engaging the second said slot; "substantially as described.
2. In a cribbage-boa'rd the combination with two thin half-sections constructed to the size of a playing-card and providedwith perforavided with slots in the edge to receive a joining-strip of joining-strips pivotally mounted "in the 'slotin one section and adapted to extend into the slot in the adjoining section and second said slot;lsubstantially'as described.
. In a cribbage-board the combination with 1 two thin half-sections constructed to the size of a playing-card andprovided withrperforations arranged for cribbage-countin g and havin g'slots in the edge to receives. joining-strip;
of joining-strips pivotally mounted in the slot in one section and adaptedto extend into the slot in theadjoining-section; andopen-ended cylinder-like receptacles for the pegs attached to the. end of the sections; substantially as described. 7
