FFICE.
WILLIAM GARRETT E. RYOKMAN, OF BROCKT ON, NEW YORK.
PAPER FRUIT-BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,650, dated March 29, 1892. Application filed September 30, 1891. Serial No. 407,358. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MORAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Fruit-Baskets and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvements in the construction of paper fruit baskets hereinafter set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved paper baskets completed. Fig. 2 is a View in elevation of the piece forming the vertical portion of the basket, showing the shape thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation, showing the shape of the bottom of the basket. Fig. at is a perspective view of the bottom when pressed into shape.
The object of my invention is to construct a cheap paper fruit-basket, in which one piece forms the sides and one the bottom, with a .narrow band round the top of the basket to stiffen it, and an ordinary handle, preferably of bent wood, secured to the basket with nails or glue or in any other convenient manner.
In the construction shown, A is a single piece of paper out in substantially the, shape shown, so that when the same is bent around a form and the endsB B thereof slightly overlapped and pasted, glued, or otherwise secured together there will be but a single joint 0 therein,which is at or near the center of one'side of the basket, the result being a basket larger at the top than at the bottom. To stifien the upper edge of the sides of the basket, I paste or glue a strip or band D of heavy paper, the ends 01 thereof being also slightly overlapped and pasted or glued together. In Fig. 2 this band D is shown as secured to the piece forming the sides before it is shaped up; but it can be put on either before or afterward, as desired.
The bottom E, Fig. 4,1 cut out substantially in the shape shown in Fig. 3. I then dampen and place it between dies, preferably heated, and press it into shape, so as to form an upturned flange F around the periphery thereof,
adapted to fit over the outside of the lower edge G of the sides of the basket, to which it is secured by means of paste or glue, the flange F serving, also, to stiffen the lower edge of the basket;
The handle H, I make preferably of a thin strip of bent wood secured to the basket, preferably by means of small nails through the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
1. The combination, in a fruit-basket, of one section forming the flaring sides of the basket, a band secured around the upper edge thereof for stiffening the same, with another section forming the bottom of the basket and having an upturned flange thereon and inte gral therewith passing over and secured to the outside of the lower edge of the sides of the basket, and a handle secured at its lower end to the upturned flange on the basket-bottom and also secured to the band around the top of the basket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a fruit-basket, of a section, as A, of paper shaped so that when the ends B B thereof are secured together it will form the flaring sides of a basket, and a band, as D, secured to the upper edge thereof, with a bottom, as E, having an upturned flange, as F, thereon engaging with and secured to the lower edges of the flaring upright portion of the basket, and a handle, as H, se-' cured to the flange F and to the band D on the upper edge of said basket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A bottom for fruit-baskets, consisting of a single piece having an upturned flange, as
F, pressed thereon and integral therewith, said flange being widened at the sides of the IQ bottom to receive the lower end of the baskethandle, in combination with the upright portion of. a basket, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM MORAN. Witnesses:
WM. P. HAYES, C. J. STURGEON.
