Minessefl [rweman UNITE STATES PATENT QFFICE.
. ARNOLD A. WHEELOGK, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,314, dated March 28, 1876; application filed January 31, 1876.
I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD A. WHEEL- OCK, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Baskets, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to provide a cheap basket, particularly designed for use by retail merchantsin making delivery of fruit and similar articles when sold.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a pers )ective View of the complete basket. Fig. 2 is a ottom View, and Fig. 3 isa vertical section, thereof.
The same letters are employed in all the figures in the indication of identical parts.
The basket is made of pastcboard. The bottom A is cut circular. The sides B are formed of two pieces, cut to give the sides a slightinclination, if preferred. Along the lower edge of the side pieces are formed a series of lugs, B which are turned under the bottom, and fastened by the ordinary paper clamps in common use for connecting sheets of paper. Lugs may be formed at the angles of the pieces, and overlapped, as shown at B in the drawings; or a single lug may be formed on one only,
and the other folded over on the inside. The sides are connected by thesame kind of clam ps and the handle, formed of two or more thicknesses of pasteboard, (or a splint of wood may be inserted,) are then attached by similar clamps. The same clamps which connect the sides may also be used for connecting the handle, which, in that case, will lie along the inside. of the seams. A binding of paper, or thin strips of sheet metal, may be fastened over the upper edge. An advertisement of any kind can be printed on the sides.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pasteboard basket, the sides of which are formed with lugs, bent under the bot-tom, and the bottom, sides, and handle are connected by metallic fasteners, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
