Description

0. BAKER. Book-Tablet.
No. 211,880. Patented Feb. 4, 1879.

UNITED STATES PATENT CE IGE.
CLARENCE W. BAKER, OF J ANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-TABLETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,880, dated February 4, 1879; application filed November 26, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. BAKER, of J anesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Tablets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in book-tablets and consists in a peculiar manner of attaching a tablet temporarily to a cover without the use of springs to hold it in position. The tablet can be instantly removed from its cover and another inserted in its place, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inner plan View of the book-cover open, showing the slot and the flexible binding. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line w w of Fig. 1.
Similar reference letters indicate like parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A E represent the book-cover. The wing A is made of two pieces of pasteboard, A B, one laid upon the other, and united together around the outsideedges only, so'a-s to form a pocket, 0, between them. The upper or inner piece, A, has a long slot formed in it, so as to expose the outer piece, B, through it.
The wing E consists of but one thickness of pasteboard, and is of the usual construction. Each of the tablets to be placed inside of this cover will have attached to it a tongue, G, as shown in Fig. 2. This tongue will be of pasteboard, just the size and thickness of that part cut away from the inner side of the wing A. This tongue or strip G is pasted or otherwise secured to a wider and thinner piece of pasteboard or thick paper, I, the edges of which project some distance beyond the outer ed gesof the two sides of the piece G, as shown.
In placing the tablet inside of the cover the tongue G is slipped into the slot or space in the inside of the wing A, while the end and edges of the piece I, to which the tongue is secured, pass between the two pieces of material of which said wing is composed, and thus hold the tablet securely in position.
In removing the tablet it is only necessary to open the two covers and pull the tablet toward the single wing E, when the tongue G and piece I will be drawn from their place in the wing A.
By means of this construction the tablet is more securely held in position, and the cover is made in effect as strong as a solid cover. Perforations in the printed matter, or other paper held in it, are avoided, and such fastening devices as springs and strings are dis pensed with.
This invention can be used with bill-heads, note-heads, statements, prescriptions, blanks, and many other kinds of printed matter, and also for memorandum-or scratch books.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a book-tablet, the covers AE,the former of which is provided with a pocket formed by and between the boards A B, said board A being provided with a slot to receive the tongue G, interposed between the tablet and piece I, which piece is secured to said tongue, and when in position rests between the boards A B, which form the cover A, as and for the purpose set forth.
