COVER FOR THE ENDS OF HUB-BANDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 470,895, dated March 15, 1892.

T0 aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JARED MARIS, residing 1n Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and -State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for the Ends of Hub-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in ornamental covers and linings for hub-bands, the object of the invention being to produce an ornamental cover and lining which may be readily and securely affixed to the point-band or an extension of the hub-band, which forms a part of the same.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts,

as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a hub-band or shell with my improved cover applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a separate View of the cover and lining. Figs. 3 and 4 are views illustrating a modification.

A represents a shell or hub-band having in proximity to its outer end an internal offset or flange a. On the end of the hub-band or shell A my improvedcover B is placed. This cover or band Bis made of anysuitable metal, and may, if desired, be nickel-plated or pol-. ished to present an ornamental appearance. The cover or band B is made to fit over the end of the hub-band, being made with an exterior portion 6, having a flange c at its lower end to extend over the offset a of the hubband and with an interior flange d, adapted to extend slightly beyond the flange or offset a in the hub-band. Inserted through the flange d of the cover or band B is a series of soft-metal pins 6, said pins resting behind the flange or offset a of the hub-band. The pins 6 are upset, preferably by means of'a pair of pliers, one jaw of which is made to bear against the head of the pin and the other jaw made to bear on the exterior portion of the cover B. Thus it will be seen that the pins e will be upset on both ends and be prevented from falling out. A cover and-lining for hubbands, thus constructed, may be easily and quickly secured on ahub-band by the use of a pair of common pliers and at a small expense.

In lieu of the construction above described, that shown in Fig. 3 may be adopted. In

this form the exterior portion of the cover B is made shorter, and in the edge of the flange d a series of slots fis made and the edge bent slightly to form a flange g. In each of these slots a soft-metal key it is inserted, said key being preferably made of soft flat metal in a form similar to a paper-fastener and is retained in the slot f by means of the inwardlyprojeoting flange g. The cover or band B will be retained in place by the engagement of the keys h with the offset or flange a in the hub-band.

If desired, the flange or offset a may be dis pensed with and the fastening devices made to bear against the tapering interior of the band.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a hub-band having an internal offset or flange, of a cover adapted to fit over the end of said hub-band and a series of-soft-metal fastening devices passing through the interior flange of said cover and resting behind the internal offset or flange of the hub-band, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a hub-band having an internal offset or flange, of a cover adapted to fit over the end of said hub-band and aseries of soft-metal pins passing through and secured to the internal flange of the cover, said pins being adapted to enter behind the offset or flange of the hub-band, substantially as set forth.

3. A cover for the end of a hub-band, consisting of an exterior portion adapted to lie on the exterior of the hub-band, a flange at the inner end of said exterior portion, an internal flange having a series of openings therein and a flange at its inner'end, and a series of fastening devices adapted to be inserted in said openings to retain the cover on the hubband, substantially as set forth.

4. The oombinatiomwith an extension-flange band having an interior offset or flange, of a cover for the end thereof and a series of softmetal fastening devices passing through the interior flange of said cover and resting behind the internal offset or flange of the extension-flange band, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, with a tapering hubband, of a cover for the end thereof and softmetal fastening devices projecting through the internal flange of the cover and bearing against the internal tapering face of the hub- IO band, substantially as set forth.
