Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SEARS, OF MONMOUTH COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, AND TAPPEN TOWNSEND, OF KINGS COUNTY, NEW YORK.
BUCKLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,94 S, dated March 21, 1865.
To all whom it muy concern.-
Beit known that we, CHARLES SEARS, of Monmouth County, in the State of New Jersey, and TAPPEN ToWNsEND, of Kings County, in the State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making Buckles for Shoes, Belts, and other Uses; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The `nature of our invention consists in making a double-acting lever for buckles, and in making concave strap-bearin g surfaces upon buckle-frames.
We make the frame or bow of the buckle in any of the usual forms and apply thereto the double lever, and attach the same by pivots or axis to the frame. The lever has a crossbar to receive a tag to attach the buckle to the shoe or other object 5 oriit may be attached in other well-known modes of attaching buckles. This lever, so made and applied, impin ges upon the strap on the upper bearing of the frame upon one side of the axis, and upon the under bearing of the frame on the other side of the axis, thus making a double-acting lever-that is, a lever which acts upon the strap at two points of impact, one upon either side of the axis, and it will act equally Well in either direction of the two times of draft of the strap. The lever may be made straight or curved, and the frame may be made with concave bearing-surfaces to hold the strap more securely when it is subject to great strain. We prefer to make said double lever from a single piece of metal by cutting it out of suitable size, turning up lips at such distance from each other as will admit between them the crossbar of the frame without excess of metal; then close the lips around said cross-bar, thus forming a barrel working on said cross-bar as a pivot.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of the buckle With the double lever, a representing the frame, b the double lever. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of parts of a buckleframe made with concave strap-bearing surfaces a a a, representing parts of the frame; b, the lever.
What we claim, and desire to secure by letters Patent, is
1. A double-acting lever for buckles.
2. A concave strap-bearing surface upon buckleframes.
3. Making and attaching the double-lever to the buckle-frame in form and manner substantially as described.
4. The combination of the doubleactin g lever with buckleframes, thus making buckles with double-actin g levers, substantially as described.
