J. M. SOOSHNY. DEVICE FOR DRESSING THE HAIR.
No. 469,191. Patented Feb. 16,1892.
WITNESSES d mro/msy.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH M. SOOSI-INY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL LEHMAN,
OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR DRESSINGTHE HAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,191, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed April 11, 1891.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. SOOSHNY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, having resided one year last past in the United States and declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylva-' nia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Dressing the Hair, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspeoification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a device for dressing a ladys back hair, the same being formed of jaws which are adapted to take hold of the hair as gathered and provide a guide on which a portion of the hair may be twisted or coiled in a right line from bottom to top.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hair-dressing device embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent perspective Views on a reduced scale, showing the manipulations thereof. Fig. 4 represents the result thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate two curved jaws, which are connected with the outwardly-bent handles 0, the latter being united at their upper ends by a coiled spring D, whereby the jaws are pressed toward each other, it being noticed that the jaw 13 is formed of separated pieces E E, joined at top and bottom by cross-bars F to thereby provide a wider or broader bearing, and the jaw A, of single construction and is normally at the center of said pieces E and bears against said cross-bars F, the latter being curved in rearward direction, so that the jaw C may be seated therein, and thus prevented from displacement.
The operation is as follows: The hair is gathered at the back, as in Fig. 2, and the handles 0 are pressed together, whereby the jaws separate, and said jaws are then placed on opposite sides of the hair, as also seen in Fig. 2, and allowed to close. The implement is now turned so that the j awB i s on the back Serial No. 388,453. (No model.)
of the hair, while some of the hair is held firmly between the two jaws. The hair that is outside of the jaws is then twisted or coiled from the bottom upward, the twisting orcoiling being on the jaw A as a guide and holder, so that a well-defined right line is produced,
extending vertically on the back of the head,
as at G, Fig. 4. The hair at the top of the line may now be further dressed in any desired style, and as the jaw Ais within the hair as a pin and the jaw B is on the outside the device may be readily removed by raising the same or withdrawing it upwardly from the hair, the line G, however, being preserved.
In practice the entire device is formed of a continuous piece of wire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hair-dressing device consisting of two jaws, one of which is wider or broader than the other, and spring-pressed handles connecting the same, said jaws being curved, as
set forth, and adapted to retain some of the hair between the same and provide a guide on which the portion of the hair outside of the jaws may be coiled, substantially as described.
2. A hair-dressing device comprising jaw B, formed of separated pieces connected by crossbars, the jaw A, of single construction and seated on said bars, and the spring-actuated handles 0, connecting said jaws A B, said jaws being concaved or curved, the parts be ing combined substantially as described.
3. A hair-dressing device comprising curved jaws and the spring-actuated handles connecting the same, one of the jaws having side pieces which are connected by cross-bars, and
the other jaw being normally seated on said cross-bars, substantially as described.
4:. A hair-dressing device consisting of two curved jaws having outwardly-bent handles, a spring connecting said handles, one of said jaws being formed of separated pieces having connecting cross-bars, the other jaw being normally at the center of said separated pieces and bearing against said cross-bars, jaw bearing against said cross-bars, said bars said aws being enrved,as set forth, said parts being curved, as set forth, said parts being 10 being combined substantially as described. combined substantially as descrlbed.
5. Ahair-dressin deviceconsistin of 'aws 5 having handles con nected by a sprir i g, o le of JOSEPH SOOSHNY' said jaws being formed of separated pieces Witnesses: having at top and bottom connecting cross J OHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, bars curved in a rearward direoti0n,the other A. P. JENNINGS.
