' HAT-.E0RM"HOLDER.
. Application filed September 28,"1 9 23. Serial No. 665,462.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM H. Minn), a citizen of the United States, residing at Autaugaville, Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Form Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments, and especially to hats.
More particularly the invention relates to a hat form maintaining device adapted for use in connection with felt hats of the type having a central creased crown.
In hats of this class it is very difiicult to maintain the proper crease in a hat without making a place at the front of the hat Where the crease is so sharp that where it takes place the hat breaks at this point. Moreover, the appearance of the hat is destroyed by this sharp peak at the front, and furthermore, dust and dirt tend to collect at the same place.
The principal and most important object of the invention is to provide a simple and light device of improved character which will maintain the crown of a felt hat in proper shape without permitting any sharp creases at any place, the device being economical to manufacture, and of such charactor that it may be readily applied to a hat by any person, no sewing or other fastening means being necessary.
lVith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like char acters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Fig. 1 is a View of a hat looking at the inside thereof and showing the device in position, certain parts of the sweat band being broken away to better disclose the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device removed from the hat. 1
Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. 7
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section transversely through a portion of the hat showing the p-ositionof the device therein.
This invention is formed throughout from wire and consists of a body portion or top frame having oppositely disposed sides 10, the top frame being of general elliptical provided at their lower end with feet 18 engaging between said sides of the hat and the sweat band 19. It is to be observed that the main frame has its sides arched as clearly shown in Fig. 3, so as to conform properly to the hat crown.
In use, the device is inserted in the hat, the sweat band first being turned outward. Then the sweat band is turned back so asto overlie the feet. 18 and the crease 13 may then be made in the hat. Thus the crease will be gently rounded at all parts and there will be no sharp end to such crease. It is obvious that the legs 16 may be bent to suit the height of the hat and'that the device may be shifted from one hat to another from time to time.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the'purpose specified.
It will be obvious that a short tubular or sleeve might substitute for the wire 15 without departing from the spirit of the invendown along the sides 17 of the hat, and are tion. It is to be designed that wherever this 7 wire rib is referred to the equivalent sleeve is also to be understood.
Having thus described the invention what 7 is claimed as new, is
l. A hat form retaining device consisting of a main frame of substantially elliptical form having. the sides composed of wires bending back and forth to form crenela tions, and legs depending from the ends of the main frameand engageable between the sides of a hat and its sweat band to hold the main frame against'the crown of a hat.
2. A hat form retaining deviceconsisting of a main frame of substantially elliptical form having the sides composed of wires bending back and forth to form crenelations, and legs depending from the ends of the main frame and engageable' between the sides of a hat and its sweat band to hold the main frame against the crown of a hat, said main frame being upwardly arched to hold the central portion of the crown of a hat elevated upon the ends thereof.
3. A device of the kind described consisting of a main frame formed from wire, the main frame being of substantially elliptical shape in general outline and the wire at the sides being bent back and forth to form crenelations, the wire at the ends forming loops, pairs of legs formed from wires having their oentral parts bound-to the loops at the ends of the main frame, said legs depending from the main frame and being provided at their lower ends with feet, the main frame being upwardly arched from the ends towards the center.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WILLIAM H. MEAD.
