WATCH GUARD.

To all fau/0m t may] concern Be it known that I, PHILIP I-I. NoL'rING, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, haveinvented a new and Improved Watch Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

rIhis invention relatesto improvements in watch guards, an object of the invention being to provide a guard for watches which 1s equipped with a novel means for preventing the accidental loss of a watch Vfrom a pocket.

A further object is to provide a guard of this character, which can be readily sewed into a poel-ret, and which will be simple and practical in construction, strong, durable and efficient in use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

lVIany guards of this charac-ter have been previously invented, but they have all proven either impractical in construction, or have had a damaging effect upon the clothing of the wearer. My improved device overcomes these difficulties.

With the above enumerated and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully1 hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. i

Referring in detail to the drawings, I have used the reference numeral 1 to designate va garment lprovided with a pocket 2 therein. In carrying out the inventioin'my improved watch guard or protector, designated by the reference numeral 3 is preferably sewed or otherwise secured at its intermediate portion to the bottom of the pocket. This protector which may be formed either from a single length of wire covered with leather, or by an arcuate fiat spring is substantially U shaped, as seen most clearly in Figure l. however, extend inwardly exerting a clamp-v 55 ing action upon a vcircular body and causing the protector to embrace the same. v,

In the particular embodiment of the inv vention hereinshown, I have used a spring 4 which comprises a' single length of'wire 4.60 bent to provide. a double spring of arcuate form. The intermediate portion 5 yof thel wire forms one end of the arc or U shaped body and a covering of leather conceals the i' wire. The free ends of the wire are flared -65 slightly apart adjacent their extremities, as indicated at 6and the lea-ther` casing or covering for the wire is bifurcated or split adjacent the ends of these arms, as seen most clearly at 7- in Figure 2. 70

This construction provides a pair of leather covered spring arms adapted lto emi i brace the stem of a watch 8. After the guard or protector has been sewed into the pocket," as indicated at 9 in Figure 2, the insertion of a watch into the pocket will spread the arms of the U shaped protector apart, and as the watch is further forced into place, they will exert a clamping action` on the watch. At the same time the other arms at opposite sides of the bifurcated portion 7 will receive the stem of the watch and positively hold thesame against accidental withdrawal from the pocket. f

It will be obvious that the construction o kthe guard or protector might be rinfinitely varied and that the exact material from which the guard is made does not necessarily form any part of this invention, since'other guards of substantially U shape with bifurcated ends would serve the same purpose.

Although I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be ap parent that various slight changes and alterations might be` made in the general form ,95

and arrangement of they parts described c y p without departing from the invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but shall consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes .100 i and alterations as fairly falll within the` spirit and scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

l. The combination with a pocket, of anarcuate spring watch guard secured at its intermediate portion to the bottom of the pocket, and4 adapted to embrace a Awatch in the pocket, said guard being bifurcated at one end to receive the stem of a Watch in the.
