Description

(No Model.)
J. H. JOHNSON.
LOAD BINDER.
Patented Jan. 19, 1892.
f 1 rTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. JOHNSON, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
LOAD-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,348, dated January 19, 1892.
Application filed September 4, 1891- Serial No; 04,72O%. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH I-I. JOHNSON, of Bradford, in the county of McKean, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Load-Binders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to load-binders, and is an improvement upon Letters Patent granted to me March 24, 1891, No. 448,862.
My object is to improve the construction and utility shown in said Letters Patent by providing a clevis upon which the sliding coupling is mounted with the spring or an elastic cushion for the purpose of imparting a yielding or elastic property to the girt which surrounds the load.
My invention consists in the several other novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claim hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my improved loadbinder in use. Fig. 2 is an isometrical view of the under sidethereof detached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a clevis having a solid clawhead, said clevis all being constructed in one piece.
A is a lever provided with a claw l at one end or other means of gripping and holding the chain and having at its opposite end a guard 2, which serves the purpose of holding the lever or that portion thereof which is used as a handle over the direct line of draft of the girt.
B is the clevis, constructed as shown, having side bars 4 4, journaled a short distance from the end of the lever upon which the claw is located, and having coupling-jaws 5 sliding thereon, with a central opening or jaw 6, adapted toclutch the chain or girt. Between the free ends of the said bar and the coup ling I insert coil-springs 7, surrounding said pieces, and which serve to form an elastic cushion for the coupling and impart a yielding or elastic property to the girt which binds the load. It will be observed that when the load is bound with the binder above set forth an elastic property is imparted to the chain, so that it will not break by any sudden jar causing an expansion, as may be incident to driving over rough or uneven roads.
In Fig. at I show a construction of clevis having the side bars, but with the solid clawhead.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for taking upthe slack in girts, consisting of a lever having a claw at one end, and a clevis consisting of side bars and a sliding coupling-jaw adapted to receive and retain a chain, and springs inserted upon said side bars between the coupling-j aw and the free ends of said bars, as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my
