QSTOLZE.
WRENCH.
(No Model.)
Patented Mayao, 189s.
UNITED lSTATES PATENT' OFFICE.
CHARLES STOIJZ, OF RHINELANDER, WISCONSIN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming' part 0f Letters Patent NO. 498,321, dated. May 30, 1893.
l Application filed April 5, 1893. Serial No. 469,129. (No model.)r l I T0 all whoml it may concern,.-
Be it know-n that I, CHARLES STOLZE, acitizen of the United States, residing `at Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and usefulA \Vrench, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to` improvements in wrenches.
The object of the present invention is to improve the'construction of wrenches, and t0 provide one adapted for use either as aj nut or pipe wrench, and capable when being used purpose of forming a. perfect sponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs. j
1 designates a shank rectangular in crosssection having a handle 2f at one end and provided atthe other end with a stationary preferably integral jaw 3, which is adapted for nuts and which, when the wrench is employed for operating on pipes, has secured to it a steel jaw-face 4. The jawface is constructed with ya hook 5 to engage the tapered end of the stationary jaw; and it is provided With opposite parallel ianges 6 eX- tending on opposite sides of the shank and projecting beyond the same and provided with openingsreceiving a pin 7 for securing the jaw-face in place. The engaging surface of the jaw-face is curved and provided with shouldered teeth. The shank has mounted on it a sliding casing 8 adapted to be adj usted onthe shank between the handle and the stationary jaw, and carrying at its upper end a pivoted jaw 9 which has its upper face vention.
provided with a seriesof` teeth or projections ada'pted to co-operate with those of the jaw-face. The sliding casing is secured in its adjustment by opposite similar pivoted pawls 10, which engage opposite teeth 11 'of the shank and which are held in such engagement by dat springs 12. jaw is provided at its lower side with a depending lug 13, which is perforated and pivoted in a recess 14. by a pin 15. The recess 14. is formed in the upper end of the casing, which is provided'thereat with an extension 16 arranged beneath the outerportion of the pivoted jaw for supporting the same. The pivoted jawiis provided at its inner side with parallel guiding flanges` 17, which are disposed on opposite sides of the shank to prevent the jaw 9 having anylate'al movement. The arrangement of the pivoted jaw 9 is such that in screwing or turning a pipe the tendency is to force the saidpivoted jaw in-v The pivoted.
ward toward the shank, thereby lessening the distance between the jaws and clamping the jaws more securely; and in releasing the' wrench the operation vis reversed and tends to separate the jaws, thereby readily freeing the wrench..
When employed as a nut wrench the jawface 4. is detached.
It will be seen that the wrench is adapted to be employed either as a nut or a pipe wrench, and that when employed forv the lat-v ter purpose it is especially adapted for such use.-
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any ofthe advantages of this in- What I claim is* Y y In a wrench, the combination of a shank havingfoppositely disposed teeth and pro-v vided at its upper end with a stationary jaw, a steel jaw-face detachably `secured. to the stationary jaw, a sliding casing mounted on the shank and provided at one side with an upward and outward extension and havinga recess at the inner side ofthe extension, spring actuated pawls pivotally mounted on the casing and engaging the teeth of the shank, and a pivoted jaw provided with a depending lug secured in the recess of the easing by a pilnand provided at its inner side with parallel guide ilanges arranged on the sides of the shank, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES STOLZE.
