SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,127, dated December 1, 1891.
Application filed September 3, 1891. Serial No.404,633. (No model.)

Be it known that I, BYRON H. GLEAsON, of Oanastota, in the county of Madison, in the State of NewYork,have invented newand usef ul Improvements in Bill-Files, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to letter, bill, or paper files.
My object is to produce a device for filing hand-bills, time-tables, or papers of any other description, so that they maybe readily hung upon the wall or upon the side of a building for public observation.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described, and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view thereof, showing a time-table suspended, broken away. Fig. 2 isa cross-section thereof, showing the cap partially raised. Fig. 3 is a view of the thumbscrew. Fig. 4: shows an end view of Fig. 1 with the cap thrown upon the base. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the file, showing an automatic spring for keeping the cap closed. Fig. 6 is another form of spring holding the cap closed or in any raised position, as shown in dotted lines.
Similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the base of the file provided with suitable means for supporting it.
B is a cap loosely secured to the upper side of the base and provided with oblong openings 1, through which the thumb-nut'2 may pass when turned longitudinally therewith.
3 is a post erected in the base and provided with a spiral spring 4.- to keep the thumb-nut at the outer end of the post for thef'purpose of producing a tension between the thumb-' nut and the outer head of the post, so that the thumb-nut will always re main in any position to which it is turned.
5 are pins located in the base, upon which the papers are suspended, and 6 is a recess in the cap for the purpose of receiving the points of the pins when the file is closed.
My invention is operated as follows: The

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A file consisting of a base, a cap loosely secured thereto and provided with openings, a post provided with a thumb-nut at its outer end, and a spiral spring surrounding the post, said post being mounted in the base, as set forth. I
