To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RICHARD W. J ONES, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondago, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Supporting Chalk, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to devices for supporting chalk in a billiard-room, and which are adapted to permit the chalk to be pulled down to be used and when released will automatically elevate it out of the way.

My object is to produce a chalk-holder which will operate perfectly without noise or clatter and which will not permit of the twisting or entangling of the cord, and in which I use a sliding weight inclosed in a guide-tube, the pulley over which the cord passes being mounted removably in the top of the tube. The doubled portion of the cord between the pulley and weight is held apart, and the free end of the cord passes down through the weight and out through a hole in the bottom of a screw-cap screwed onto the bottom of the tube.

My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a like section of the upper end of the tube and edge elevation of the pulley-block. Fig. 4: is a transverse section of the base of the pulleyblock. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the weight detached and a plan view of the elastic washer which lies on top thereof. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the weight, showing the manner in which the cord is attached to the weight.

A is a tube, the lower end of which is closed by a cap 1, screwed thereon or onto athreaded collar 2 thereon. This cap is provided with a central opening 3, the edges of which are beveled or rounded.

B is a pulley-block inclosing a wheel 4. and provided with a base 5 of such size as to properly fit into the top of the tube, said base having vertical side grooves 6.

C is the sliding weight, of proper cylindrical, or other form, to loosely fit within the tube and provided with a vertical longitudinal groove 7, (shown in dotted lines,) or with a hole through it vertically, and at 8 I show acavity dug out of the weight, leaving a rim 9, which is perforated vertically to receive the cord 10, one end of which is secured to the weight by the knot 11, which lies within said cavity. Thence the cord passes up over the pulley-wheel, down through the groove 7 in the weight, thence down through the hole 3 in the cap and down to the chalk-receiver 12. An elastic washer 13 is placed over the cord and lies on top of the weight to take up the concussion of the weight striking the base of the pulley-block, and this is also grooved at a to permit the cord to pass down freely. Another elastic washer 14 is placed on the cord, held in position by the knot 15 in the cord, and is adjusted by shifting the knot up or down, and normally this washer lies against the bottom of the cap, as shown in Fig. 1. An eye 16 is formed on top of the pulley, in which I knot a cord, by which the device is suspended, and this cord also acts as a deadener when a metallic suspension-hook is used.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device for supporting a chalk-holder, comprising a tube, a pulley on top thereof, a sliding weight therein, a cord passing over the pulley and having one end secured to the weight and the other passing down through the weight and out through the cap upon the bottom of the tube, and means to suspend the tube.

2. A device for supporting a chalk-holder, comprising a tube, a pulley detachably secured to the top thereof, a sliding weight therein, a cord having one end secured to the weight and thence passing up over the pulley and thence down through the weight and out through the cap upon the bottom of the tube, elastic washers upon the cord on top of the weight and below the cap, and means to suspend the tube.
