lillllllllllllll ik a w D T N 54 my 3 T UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. SPOFFORD, OF BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
PlLLOW-SHAM H OLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,990, dated October 27, 1891..
Application filed November 29, 1890. Serial No. 873,009. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN F. SPOFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pillow Sham Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of the construction herein shown of the supporting-brackets of the holder and the means employed in connection with the brackets to lock the holder inan upright position and to enable it to be turned down upon the pillows. I am aware that several forms of supporting-brackets and locking mechanism have been employed for that purpose, and my invention is confined to the particular construction and arrangement specified.
Figure 1 is a front plan view of my holder secured to the head-board of a bedstead. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side plan View of one of the brackets in which the holder is journaled. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the said bracket, shown in section through the line 00 y in Fig. 3.
The holder consists of two frames, one of which is composed of a round wooden bar a and wire 0, and the other of a similar bar I) and wire d. The bars a and I) slide upon each other in sleeves ff, secured to them respectively, whereby the length of the holder may be adjusted in the usual manner. The bar I) is journaled in the bracket The journal in the bracket 9 is shown at h in Figs. 3 and 4.
A represents the head-board of abedstead, and B B its head-posts. The bracket g is secured to the inside of the head-post by screws in the holes la is or in any other suitable manner. The bar a is journaled in the bracket m, which is secured to the inside of the opposite head-post in the same way as the bracket g. The brackets m g are provided with vertical slots p 19, through which portions of the wires 0 cl travel in raising or lowering the holder. A portion of the upper part of the bracket 9 is cut away to form a square shoulder 3.. Sliding upon the wired is atubular piece or sleeve If, the diameterof which is slightly larger than the width of the slot 19, so as to prevent the wire (1 from passing through the vertical slot 19 when the sleeve t has dropped behind the shoulder s. The sleeve 15 is made large enough to slide freely upon the wire (1, so that it will drop into place by its own weight when the holder is turned upright, as shown in Fig. 1.
The dotted lines o d in Fig. 2 represent the wire frame of the holder when it is turned down upon the pillows.
o o are horizontal slots in the sides of the brackets g and m, which are designed for the introduction of the holder into the brackets, which is accomplished by placing the holder in a horizontal position between the brackets and then sliding the frames 0 cl apart, so that the wires will enter the slots u o and the bars to Z7 will enter their respective journals.
The staplesl Zare employed for the purpose of attaching the pillow-sham to the holder by pins or other well-known means.
To turn the holder down upon the pillows, the operator first releases it by sliding the sleeve 23 above the top of the bracket g, so as to allow the wire at to pass through the vertical slot 29. When the holder is returned to an upright position, the sleeve tfalls down into contact with the bracket 9 and behind its shoulder s and thereby looks the holder securely in that position.
The advantages of my invention consist of cheapness of construction, simplicity in operation, and inability to get out of order.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A pillow-shamholder made in two sections which slide upon each other longitudinally, said sections being composed of the bars a and b and wire frame 0 and cl, the frame d having a sleeve tsliding thereon, combined with the brackets m and g, having vertical slots 19 19 therein, through which the upright wires of the holder pass when the holder is being turned up or down, the bracket hav-,
ing the shoulder s on its upper edge and the diameter of said sleeve 2? being greater than the width of the slot 19 in the bracket whereby the holder may be secured in an up- IOO said sections being composed of the bars a passing the Wire frames through the slots 1; and Z7 and the Wire frameso and (I, combined u, substantially as described.
with the brackets m and g, having vertical slots 19 p for the passage of the wires 0 d, and JOHN F. SPOFFORD.
horizontal slots Q] v on the inner sides of said Witnesses: brackets, whereby the said Wire frames may CHAS. F. PERKINS, be introduced into the vertical slots 19 p by JOHN L. MOLEAN.
