WILLIAM II. RICHMOND, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, ASSIGNOR TO THE ARBOR CITIT CHAIR COMPANY, OF ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN.
SWI N G SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,887, dated March 3, 1896.. Application led August 13, 1895. Serial No. 559,186. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. RICHMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of Isabella and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
1o My invention is especially designed to be used as a house er porch swing, which maybe suspended from the ceiling and when not in use drawn up out of the way, so that the space occupied by it in swinging may be used for other purposes.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical lonzo gitudinal section showing itin full lines in its folded position and in dotted lines as in use. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the swing as in use. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line :c Fig. l. Fig. t is a detached 2 5 perspective view of a portion of the platform.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the pivotal connection of the hangerbars- Fig. 6 illustrates the construction of the folding seat.
A are hanger-bars hinged at their upper 3o ends to the ceiling or other support, preferably by means of the hooks B. These hooks have screw-threaded shanks a and right-angle bends h, upon which latter the hangers are pivoted, being held from disengagement there 3 5 from by the Cotter-pins c. The hooks B are secured in pairs to the strips C, which may be screwed or otherwise secured to the ceiling.
D are rods or cross-bars connecting the lower ends of each pair of hanger-bars. E is 4o a platform pivotally supported upon said rods, preferably by providing the side bars, E, of the platform with notches F adapted to engage with the rods C and held from accidental disengagement therefrom by the hooks G en gaging with the staples Gr'. At each end of the platform Eis secured a folding seat comprising the seat-section I-I, pivotally secured between the bars A a short distance above the platform, and the back-section I pivoted 5o at its lower end upon the rods D.
The pivotal connection between the seat I-I and the bars A preferably consists of the pins CZ formed at each end of the front bar, e, of the seat, passing part way thro ugh the hangerbars A and secured thereto by the screw f. The back-section I consists of the outwardlybowed side bars, g, across the upper part .of which the back extends, and the cross-bar h, adapted to engage with notches t' for-ined on the under side of the seat-section, all so ar- 6o ranged that the seat and back m ay be adjusted to different angles and when not in use may be folded up substantially into line with the bars A.
.I is a shelf or table detachably pivoted to the bars A by the short pins j at each corner engaging with corresponding apertures in the bars A.
The parts being thus constructed the swing may be used either with or without the shelf 7o J in position, which latter may be readily removed by springing the bars A enough to disengage the pinsj therefrom. Then in place the shelf .I will always maintain its horizontal position whatever the inclination of the swing, as it forms one side of a parallelogram frame.v Thus the swing may be used not only for amusement, but many kinds of work for which a table is .required may be performed in the swing while it is in motion. 8o
When the swing is not in use the seats may be folded by disengaging the bar h from the notches i' and then turning the seat and back sect-ions up into line with hanger-bars, the bowed or bent form of the back-section allowing it to close up more compactly than if it were straight. The swing may now be drawn up to the ceiling by means of a cord or rope K passing over a pulley L. As itis drawn up the paraIlelogram-frame will flatten out, 9o so that when iinally secure in its raised position it occupies the least possible space. The lower seat is prevented from falling down by a suitable fastening device, such as the hook M, which secures the end of the back-section 9 5 to the bars A.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. A folding swing comprising a parallela gram frame consisting of the hanger-bars A hinged to the ceiling or other support, and the roo platform E pivotally secured to the lower end of said hangers upon cross-rods F, in combination with folding seats upon opposite sides of said frame, each consisting of the seat-section H pivotally secured between the hangerbars and an outwardly-bowed back-section I pivoted to the rod F, and provided with a crossbar h adapted to engage with notches c' on the seatsection7 said sections H and I being adapted to fold up approximately into line with the hanger-bars, and means for drawing up the lower end of the swing, substantially as described.
2. In a swing, the combination with a parallelogram frame consisting of the hanger-bars A hinged at their upper ends to the ceiling or other support, and the platform E pivotally secured at the lower end of said bars, of a seat secured to side of said frame and a shelf or table pivotally secured to said frame above the seat adapted to maintain its horizontal position during the movement of the swing, substantially as described.
3. In a swing, the combination with a parallelogram frame consisting of the hanger-bars A hinged at their upper ends to the ceiling or other support, and the platform E pivotally secured to lower ends of said bars, of a seat secured at the side of said frame and shelf. or table J provided with the corner pivots j, engaging with corresponding apertures in the sides of the hanger-bars and adapted to be disengaged therefrom by springing the bars, substantiallyT as described.
4,. In a swing the combination with a parallelogram frame consisting of the hangerebars A hinged at their upper ends to the ceiling or other support, and the platform E pivotally secured to the lower ends of said bars, of a shelf or table pivotally secured to said hangerbars above the platform, adapted to maintain its horizontal position during the movement of the frame, and folding seats upon opposite sides of said frame, each comprising the seat-section H and back-section I pivotally connected to the han ger-bars and adj ustably engaging with cach other, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature -I
