PILLOW.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent' No. 461,916, dated October 2*?, 18391.

Beit known that I, WILL W. WATERIIoUsE, a citizen of `the United States, residing at the city of Oshkosh, in the county of Vinnebago and State of IVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillows and Cushions; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,` such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates,principally, to pillows; and the objects of my invention are, first, to lessen the cost withoutmaterially decreasing the effectiveness and durability of the pillow; second, to provide two kinds of stuffing in the same pillow, each distinct and separate from the other, and, third, to stiffen the pillow and prevent the contents from bunching.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis the sack or tick; Fig. 2, the same after the closed end is turned in ready for filling. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation; Fig. Ll, a horizontal section lengthwise of the pillow.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

I provide a sack 'or tick A, Fig. l, nearly twice the length of the pillow desired, with the end a closed or sewed together and the endet open. Iturn the closed end ct within the sack nearly tothe end u', Fig. 2, and fill the opening d with the coarser material B and sew or fasten the edges together. From the opposite end ct I fill `in or stuff the finer material O around the core of coarser material and sew or fasten the edges together. I thereby provide a pillow with a center of coarse material B, surrounded by a finer material O, and each is entirely distinct and separate from the other. One end of the pillow may be opened to add to or remove the coarse material and the other end opened to add to or remove the finer material. The iiner material surrounds the coarser upon all sides and also upon one end, so that the same may be thoroughly shaken up and equally distributed at any time. The center may be of wool and the outside of feathers, or the center of excelsior and the outside of wool or hair, as desired.

In pillows for insomnia and the like, material with soporific properties may be placed in the center and surrounded by feathers, which will serve to retain in a required degree the aroma from the inside material. For medicinal purposes I claim my invention is invaluable, as differently-medicated material may beintroduced into the center or removed therefrom from time to time, as desired.

The central portion being of coarser material serves to stiften the pillow and prevents the contents of the pillow from bunching, and the pillow may thereby be made practically of less weight.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A pillow or similar article made of a fabric and constructed in the form of abag or sack open at one end and closed at the other, the inclosed end and nearly one-half of the fabric being enveloped within the remaining openended portion, the enveloped portion being` filled with a suitable supporting material and the enveloping portion Abeing filled with a suitable material, the two fillings being independent of one another and accessible from opposite ends of the pillow, said ends being closed by suitable fastening means, substan tially as described.
