Be it known that l, OTTOMAR STEINER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Frankenberg, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, Pillows, and Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.

This invention relates to mattresses, pillows, and similar articles and to a new process for manufacturing articlesof this class whereby many of the objections to such arti cles as now generally made are obviated. All spring, horsehair, sea-grass, or feather mattresses as usually made generally take up dust, germs of disease, and the like, and the removal of which is only possible to people of unusual skill, as the taking to pieces and putting together of the mattress or pillow is very difiicult and can usually be accomplished only by those W110 thoroughly understand the construction thereof, and as a consequencethe cleaning of the mattress or pillow, as well as the loosening of the same, is only undertaken in few cases and when the same becomes absolutely necessary for hygienic reasons. A further inconvenience resulting from the present process of constructing mattresses consists in the packing and crushing of the material of which they are composed and the method of their construction, by which they are usually stitched through and through, and to obviate these and other difficulties I provide my improved mattresses and pillows with single cells having perpendicular cellwalls, said cells being designed to receive the packing or other material which constitutes the body of the mattress or pillow.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a piece of goods, two of which are employed in making a mattress; Fig. 2, a similar view showing a part of the process of construction; Fig. 3, a similar View showing the side walls of the mattress covered, as well as the separate cells thereof; Fig. 4, a perspective end view of a mattress-casin g made according to my invention; Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified method of forming the cells. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the mattress made according to my invention; Fig. 8, a perspective View of a mattress made according to my invention and provided with a removable cover; Fig. 9, a side view of a pillow similarly made and provided with a removable cover; and Figs. 10 and ll represent modified forms of the mattress-casing which I employ.

In the practice of my invention, reference being made to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, I provide a mattress casing or covering which consists of two similar pieces of goods A, one of which is designed to form the bottom and the other the top, and these pieces of goods are provided with zigzag lines a, and I also stitch or otherwise secure along these lines narrow strips or ribbons B, by means of which cells C are formed, and each of the pieces A, which constitute the top and bottom of the mattress-casing, are provided at their sides and ends with longitudinal folding strips a which are adapted to overlap and be con nected by means of buttons or to be stitched together or otherwise secured in any desired manner.

In practice one end of the mattress or pillow is usually left open, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to expose the separate rows of cells, and said cells may be filled with the desired packing or mattress material through these exposed openings, or they may be filled before the top or cover is applied.

In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified arrange ment of the cells, and in this form of construction the strips or ribbons B, which are stitched to the bottom and top of the cover or casing, are arranged diagonally, and the cells thus formed are square.

In Fig. 6 I have shown one form ofimattress made according to this invention, which consists of four rows of cells C, said mattress being provided with a cover and being ready for use, and in Fig. 7 a similar view showing the covering raised at one corner, and I may also provide means to prevent the mattress or packing material from coming out of the cells, as shown in Fig. 10, said means consisting of square pieces D, composed of any suitable fabric or goods, which are fastened in position by sewing or otherwise in such manner that they cover the corners of the cells, and are secured thereto by stitching or otherwise, and the outer cells are covered by strips E, formed on the sides and ends of the cover or casing of the mattress.

In Fig. 8 I have shown a mattress made according to my invention, in which the separate cells C are filled with any preferred packing or mattress material, and the mattress thus formed is provided with a detachable or removable cover G, which may be connected therewith in the manner of an ordinary pillow, and which is provided at one end with folding flaps g, by means of which it may be closed by buttons, hooks, or otherwise.

In Fig. 9 I have shown a pillow similarly made and provided with a similar cover, which may be connected therewith and removed therefrom whenever desired, and in Fig. 11 Ihave shown a cover or casing G, provided with a central longitudinal slit or opening 9 the edges of which are provided with loops or eyes 9 and the strips or ribbons B are similarly provided with loops or eyes (9, and a cord H is woven through these loops or eyes, and the slit 9 of the cover or casing is thus drawn together and at the same time connected with the strips or ribbons B by which the cells are formed.

In mattresses and pillows constructed as herein described it is impossible for the mattress or packing material to become dislodged or packed or crushed out of proper shape or position, and a purchaser can readily determine of what material the mattress or pillow is composed, and it will be apparent that the cells may be filled with any desirable or suitable mattress or packing material.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I As an improved article of manufacture, a mattress or similar article comprising a covering which is provided with zigzag lines to which are secured ribbons, whereby a plurality of cells are formed; longitudinal folding strips which are adapted to be secured together, and suitable packing material to fill said cells and means to prevent said packing material leaving the cells consisting of square pieces D and strips E, said mattress being provided with a cover which is provided with flaps adapted to be closed by suitable fastening devices, substantially as and for the purpose described.
