SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,498, dated September 29, 1891.

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BERRY, of Stamford, in the county of Fairield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference belng had to the accompanying drawings.
My improvements relate to bolt actuating and dogging mechanism.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the engagement of the cam or wing on the end of an ordinary key-hub of a cylinder-lock shall be positive and certain and whereby the bolt shall be dogged in the locked and unlocked positions securely, and
at the same time in such a way that the dog can be positively and easily released.
I-Ieretofore in this class of locks the bolt has generally been held in the locked and unlocked positions by means of a spring-actuated lever, which necessarily left some play to the bolt; but the principal objection to that means of dogging a bolt is that it is possible sometimes for the cam upon the key-hub to be revolved in the direction of locking without throwing the bolt suiciently far forward to have the spring-actuated dogging-lever go behind the fence and dog the bolt in the locked position. In such a case the bolt could be pushed back Vby hand, or it might possibly work back itself, and get into such a position that the key could not be turned either forward orbackward, thus causing a lock-out. My improvements are designed to overcome these objections and to furnish a construct-ion and arrangement of parts by which all the movements for lockingand unlockingand dogging the bolt in both the locked and unlocked positions are positive, certain, and reliable, and my improvements are simple, durable, and economical to manufacture.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View showing so much of the internal parts of an ordinary mortised door-lock having its capplate removed as is necessary to illustrate an embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. l, the only difference between the two being that in Fig. l the wing of the key-hub is shown to have moved the sliding plate slightly in the direction for casting the bolt, and in Fig. 2 the sliding plate is Serial No. 369,655. (No model.)

Referring to the letters upon the drawings, A indicates a lock-case; B, a bolt; C, a lockcylinder; D, a key-hub in the cylinder, and E a hub-wing, all these parts being ot usual construction.
The bolt is provided with two longitudinal openings F,` serving as guideways; and the lock-case has secured to it two lugs or guides G, which enter these openings.
H indicates small screw-caps which may be used to hold the sliding plate K upon the bolt.
LL are ordinary talons upon the bolt.
M is a pivoted dog, provided with the segmental gear N, which meshes with the rack O upon the sliding plate. This dogl serves not only to dog the bolt in the locked and unlocked positions, but also serves to cast and retract the bolt, having connected with it the thumb-piece P. (See Figs. 4L and 5.)
Q indicates an angular projection or camlike part upon the dog, against which bears a spring R. When the bolt is retracted, as shown in Fig. 2, the spring bears upon one face of the angular projection so as to hold the dog in place to dog the bolt in the unlocked position. When the bolt is cast, as in Fig. 3, the spring holds the dog in place to dog the bolt in the locked position.
S indicates talons upon the sliding plate, against which the wing E operates to east and retract the bolt when the key is used. Whenever the bolt is to be cast or retracted, either by the use of the key or by the use of the thumb-piece, the sliding plate will first be moved slightly in the proper direction. This movement will disengage the dog from the bolt-talon against which it bears to dog the bolt and free the bolt to move in the direction in which the sliding plate has been started. Further turning the key or thumb-piece will move the bolt to the lim-it of its throw, where IOO 5 motion of the bolt, which will release the dog',
as before stated, and then the bolt will move to the limit of its throw and be again dogged.
The different positions of the dog, as illustrated in Figs. l, 2, and 3, will show the opera- 1o tion.
I do not confine myselt` to the precise forms and relations of the parts illustrated, because the substance of my invention may be e1nbodied undersome considerable modilieations 15 of form.
l. In a look, the combination, with a bolt, of a plate movable upon the bolt, and key mechanism :for operating primarily the plate zo and then the bolt, the movement of the bolt following` a little after the rst movement of the plate when the bolt is east and retracted, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the bolt, the sliding plate, the dog` geared to the sliding plate, and the spring bearing` upon the dog, substam tially as set forth.
3. In a lock, the combination of a bolt and dog,` therefor and an independent movable plate for actuating' the dog, substantially as set forth.
4. In a lock, a bolt and slide thereon, in combination with a @am which is actuated by a thumb-piece and which in turn aetuates the slide and bolt, substantially as set forth.
