To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUST ARENs and ERNEST L. TEIOH, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to looks, and is particularly concerned with an emergency or panic attachment, as applied to a so-called unit lock of the type illustrated in United States Letters Patent No. 971,340 of September 27, 1910.
The object of the invention is to provide a lock of this character with an emergency bar extending across the inner side of the door, whereby the lock may be unlatched at all times merely by pressure against this bar.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of a construction and arrangement of parts, a preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a face view of the inner side of a unit lock, including a fragmentary view of a panic or emergency bar in conjunction therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 Fig. 1,showing so much of the lock mechanism as is necessary to an intelligent understanding of the invention. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the cover plate removed. Fig. 4 is a detail of a pin tumbler lock employed in this type of unit lock. Fig. 5 is a face view of the locking yoke employed with the pin tumbler lock. Fig. 6 is a detail of a member for securing the yoke in position upon the pin tumbler mechanism. Fig. 7 is a plan viewof the emergency lever, operated by the emergency bar, and Fig. 8 comprises a plan and side elevation of the actuating hub for the emergency yoke.
In the embodiment of our invention herein selected for illustration, 1 indicates the inner face plate of the lock frame. 7 I

1 is a latch bolt, and 5 is a dead locking controller.
6 is the outer knob having a tubular stem 7, rotatably mounted in a sleeve 8 secured tot-he main lock frame.
' 9 is a roll back spindle, upon which a roll back 10 is fixed against longitudinal movement, and which rotates with said spindle. The roll back 10 also slides within slot 7 on opposite sides of the knob stem, whereby said roll back may be rotated by rotation of said knob. A second roll back 11 is slidingly and rotatably mounted on the spindle 9 and is suitably held in corresponding slots in the opposite sides of a'tubular stem 12, forming an extension of a pin tumbler cylinder 13 at the inner side of the lock.
14 is a tubular stem forming an extension of the locking plug of the pin tumbler mechanism, and having a spiral cam shaped end 15 with which a stud 16 on the spindle 9 cooperates, whereby the spindle may be moved longitudinally to carry the roll back 10 into suitable notches 8 at the opposite end of the bearing sleeve 8, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, whereby the lock mechanism is locked against operation by the outer knob. A'spring 17 on the spindle serves to return the spindle and the roll back 10 to normal operative position, when the spindle is released by the pin tumbler look, at the inner side of the door.
The parts hereinbefore described, their connection with the latch bolt and their manner of operation are fully set forth in Patent No. 971,340, to which reference is made for proper description. The latch bolt operating yoke is indicated in section at 18, it being understood that the rear end of this yoke is provided with cross pieces or cross heads extending transversely back of the roll-backs 10 and 11. In order to apply our invention to a lock of this character, the inner knob corresponding in construction and arrangement substantially to the outer knob here shown, is removed, and, if desired, the inner bearing sleeve 19 is shortened somewhat in order that the inner pin tumbler lock mechanism and the emergency bar mechanism may be compactly arranged upon the inner face plate 1 of the lock frame.
As indicated in Fig. 4, the inner pin tumbler locking plug 20 is provided with the tubular extension 14 heretofore referred to, the spiral cam surface of which engages the pin 16 on the spindle 9. The stem of the inner knob, usually employed, is replaced by a tubular stem 21, within which the looking plug 20 operates, and said stem has at its outer end a yoke 22 (see Figs. 2 and 5) having a pair of threaded studs 23 adapted to embrace the pin tumbler chamber 24 of the pin tumbler lock 13, and having at its opposite side an actuating lug 25 adapted to be engaged by the actuating shoulder 26 (Fig. 8), and the upper end of the emergency spindle 27 The emergency lever 28 (Fig. 7) has a hub 28 provided with a rectangular bore to receive the rectangular end 30 of the emergency spindle 27, and the corresponding angular end of a cap 31, said parts being secured together by means of a suitable bolt, and being rotatably mounted between upper and lower bearings 32 and 33 extending from the inner face plate 1. The emergency hub has secured thereto one end of a spring 34, the opposite end of which is suitably secured to the face plate at 35, so that when the hub is rotated by the emergency bar to actuate the bolt, the parts will be returned to their normal position. To the emergency lever 28 is secured one end of the emergency bar 29, the opposite end of which is hinged at the rear of the inner side of the door. The emergency lever stands out from the door at an angle of about 45, so that when the bar is pressed, the emergency spindle will be rotated, and by means of the actuating shoulder 26 cooperating with the lug 25 on the emergency yoke 22, will serve to rotate bodily the emergency yoke 22, together with the pin tumbler mechanism 13 at its tubular stem, and thereby operates the roll-back 11 to retract the latch bolt.
By reason of the manner of mounting the emergency yoke 22 on the pin tumbler lock 13, this pin tumbler lock, together with its tubular stem 14, will always be rotated with and by the emergency yoke, and conversely, rotation of the pin tumbler plug 20, together with its tubular stem 14, will always rotate the emergency yoke 22, together with its stem 12, whereby the roll-back 11 may at all times be freely operated either by key or by the emergency bar 29. This is true also, even though the outer knob may be dead-locked, in which case the spindle 9 takes a position with the stud 16 in the dotted position indicated in Fig. 2, this does not interfere with the clockwise rotation of the pin tumbler stem 14, even though the roll-back 10, which is fixed against rotation on the spindle, is in its dead-locked position indicated in dotted line (Fig. 2), which would prevent rotation of the spindle 9. It is obvious also that when the spindle with its lug or pin 16 is in the normal operative position indicated in Fig. 2, it will not interfere with the rotation of the tubular stem 14, since the roll-back 10 is at such time released from its dead-locked position, and consequently the spindle may rotate with the tubular stem 14. It will be seen, therefore, that the latch bolt is operated by the emergency bar under all conditions, that is to say, whether or not the outer knob has been dead-locked by the pin tumbler locking mechanism, at the inner side of the door.
l/Vhile we have herein described the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that the same may be altered in detail and in relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat we claim is:
1. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a rollback therefor of a cylinder lock mechanism operatively connected with said roll-back, an emergency bar extending transversely of a door, and an operative connection between said bar and said cylinder lock where by said latch bolt may be retracted by pressure upon said bar.
2. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a roll-back therefor of a cylinder lock mecha nism operatively connected with said rollback, a yoke mounted on said lock, an emergency bar extending transversely of a door, a lever at one end of said bar, and connect-ions between said lever and said yoke whereby said latch bolt may be withdrawn by pressure upon said bar.
3. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a. rollback therefor of a cylinder lock mechanism upon the inner side of a door operatively connected with said roll-back, a second rollback for said latch bolt, a knob upon the outer side of the door operatively connected with said second roll-back, means for dead locking said second rollback by said cylinder lock mechanism, a panic bar extending transversely of the door operatively connected with said cylinder lock, and means whereby said latch bolt may be released by said bar through said cylinder lock and said first roll-back when said second rollback is in dead locked or released position.
4. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt, of a cylinder lock mechanism upon the inner side of a door operatively connected therewith, a knob upon the outer side of the door also operatively connected with said latch bolt, means for dead locking said latch bolt against operation by said knob, an emergency bar extending transversely of the door and operatively connected with said cylinder lock and means whereby said bar may retract the latch bolt both when said latch bolt is dead locked against, or operable by, said knob.
5. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a roll-back therefor, of a cylinder lock mechanism upon the inner side of a door operably connected with said latch bolt, a roll-back hub mounted upon said-cylinder lock mechanism, an emergency bar extending transversely of the door and operatively connected with said hub whereby said hub and cylinder lock mechanism may be rotated together bodily by pressure upon said bar to retract said latch bolt.
6. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a rollback therefor, of a cylinder lock mechanism upon the inner side of a door adapted to retract said latch bolt, a roll-back hub mounted upon said cylinder lock mechanism operatively connected with said latch bolt, an emergency bar extending transversely of the door and operatively connected with said hub whereby said cylinder lock and said hub may be rotated bodily together by pressure upon said bar to retract said latch bolt.
7. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a rollback therefor of a spindle slidably mounted upon said roll-back, a second roll-back fixed against rotation and longitudinal movement on said spindle, a cylinder lock mechanism adapted to actuate said spindle longitudinally to dead lock and release said second roll-back, a lmob upon the outer side of a door arranged to actuate said second rollback when in released position to retract said latch bolt, a roll-back hub mounted upon said cylinder lock mechanism and operatively connected with said first roll-back,
an emergency bar arranged transversely of a door and operatively connected with said roll-back hub whereby said hub and cylinder lock may be rotated together by pressure upon said bar to retract said latch bolt through said first mentioned roll-back.
8. ln a lock of the character described, the combination with a latch bolt and a roll back therefor of a cylinder lock mechanism upon the inner side of a door adapted to actuate said roll-back, a knob upon the outer side of the door adapted to retract said latch bolt, means whereby said cylinder lock mechanism may dead lock the latch bolt against operation by said knob, an emergency bar extending transversely of the door and operatively connected with said cylinder lock and means whereby said latch bolt may be retracted by pressure upon said bar when said latch bolt is deadlocked against or released for operation by said knob.
