of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks, and more particularly to locks for hotel corridor doors.
The invention has special reference to locks of so-called one bolt typefli. 6. those where in addition to the latch bolt a single dead bolt is employed, which is protractable from either side of the door, provision being made for blocking the operation of certain keys at the outside when the dead bolt has been thrown from the inside, although permitting the retraction of the dead bolt from the outside at all times by a special key called the emergency key. Moreover, my improvements are especially applicable to a lock of this type wherein the latch bolt as well as the dead bolt is always retractable by the emergency key and, when the dead bolt is retracted, by the other keys. 7
One 'of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a lock wherein a key such as a guest or change key is operable to retract the latch bolt from the outside of the door when the dead bolt is in retracted position, but in which the cylinder lock bit operated by the change key will be inoperative to protract the dead bolt on a reverse movement of the key and will contact with, and

latch-bolt retracting lever mounted on the dead bolt. V
Another object of the invention is to furnish certain detail features of improvement in a lock of the type described where one of the latch bolt retracting levers is mounted on a dead bolt, or its equivalent, and another latch bolt retracting lever is pivoted to the case, the dead bolt, being protractahle from the inside of the door by means of a thumb turn. 7
To these and other ends the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a lock embodying my improvements, the cap plate being omitted and the dead bolt being'shown in retracted position, F 2 is a view of the main part of Fig. 1, showing the retraction of the latch bolt by a key at. the outside of the door, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the dead bolt protracted by the-thumb turn member, Fig. 4 1s ,a reverse view showing. the dead bolt partlyretracted by the emergency key from the position shown in F ig..3, Fig. 5 is'a sec tion on line 55 of Fig. 1, showing the change key in position in the cylinder lock, Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the emergency key inserted in the cylinder lock, and Fig. 7 is a detail of the outside hub of the latch retracting mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, the customary case 10.is provided with the usual latch bolt 11, and adapted to be retracted by a knob shoe or yoke 12, with which are associatedv inside and outside hubs or rollbacks 13 and 14, respectively, through which passes the usual knob spindle (not shown). In the particular lock selected for illustration it is intended that the outside knob be permanently dead or inactive, for which purpose the outside hub 14 is provided with a projection 15', (Fig. 7) fitting between lugs 16 and 17 on the back wall of the case, whereby said hub is prevented from turning. The lugs 16, 17 may be the usual ones cast on the case for cooperation with the customary dogging slide operable from the face of the case.
*Above the latch bolt 11 the case is pro-' vided with a dead bolt 18'. This dead bolt has pivoted thereto, a tumbler 1-9, with a loop 20, and a projection 21 on the loop, eX- tending between talons 22- on the lower part of the; dead bolt, andadapted to be engaged by the wing 23 of a thumb turn hub 24: operable from the inside of the room by the usual thumb turn (not shown). By this construction the dead bolt may be protracted by rotation of the thumb turn hub in a clockwise direction with respect "to Fig. 1, whereupon the parts will take the positions shown in F ig..3. The projection-2l provided on the tumbler loop to cooperate with the thumb turn hub is at the lower part of said loop, and at the upper part thereof is a somewhat similar projection 25, extending between talons 26 on the upper portion of the bolt. The projection 25 and talons 26 are located in the plane of, and adapted to cooperate with a so-called emergency cam arm ordog 27 mounted on the back of the case. As the rection the dead bolt will be protracted or retracted in an obvious manner by contact of said cam arm with the upper talons of the bolt and the upper tumbler pro ection.
The tumbler 19 is provided witha stump adapted to be operated by a change key or guest key 31 (Fig. 5) and by an emergency key 32 (Fig. 6). This cylinder lock isrpr0- vided with abit or dog 33 constructed and arranged in the manner described in Letters Patent No. 1,069,734, granted to Sargent &
Company on August 12th, 1913, as assignee of John H. Shaw. The bit or dog 33 isv operable by the guest key 31 and by the emergency key 32, but as will be seen from Figs. 5 and 6, said bit or dog is located out of the plane of the. upper bolt talons 26 and tumbler projection 25, so that the guest key is inoperative to protract or retract the dead bolt. The emergency key 3 2, however, has its end of somewhat different shape as compared with the guest key 31, and it is adapted to push out of the rear end of the key-way a spring controlled coupling member 34, whereby said member may be engaged with a groove 35 in the cam arm 27. In this manner the cam arm may be coupled to the key plug so that it may be operated by the emergency key to protract and retract the dead bolt 18. The guest key 31, on the other hand, being inoperative to: project the coupling member 34, will have no action whatever on the dead bolt, as above stated.
Although the change key is inoperative on the dead bolt under all conditions, it is adapted to retract the latch bolt 11 when the dead bolt is in retracted position. To this end the dead bolt carries a latch retracting lever 36 pivoted to said bolt at 37 and having a free end 38 adapted to rest on the upper edge of a main latch retracting lever 39 pivoted in the case at 40, and having downwardly extending arm 41 coiiperating LviIth a cross-head 42 on the stem of the latch o t. r 1 a 1 Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, the latch bolt 11 may be retracted by inserting the guest key 31 in the cylinder lock and rotating the bit'33 in a coimter-clock-wise direction with respect to Fig. 1,.whereby the free end of lever 36 is depressed. In engaging the upper edge of the lever 39 the lever 36 rocks said lever 39 on its pivot 40 and retracts the latch bolt in an obvious manner. If the direction of rotation of the change key in the: cylinder lock is reversed, the dead bolt 18 will be unafiected, as previously explained, and the bit 33 will bring up against the right hand side of the free end 38 of lever 36 (Fig. 1) whereby further rotation of the bit in that direction will be prevented. When the guest wishes to lock his room against intrusion, he throws the dead bolt 18 by means of the thumb turn hub 24, as shown in Fig. 3. In this position loft the parts the bit 33 will not reach the .bolt. After the dead bolt has been retracted by the emergency key a further movement of said key in the same direction will move the bit 33 into contact with lever 36 to retract the latch bolt.
WVithou-t limiting myselfto the construction shown, I claim:
1. In a lock, the combination of a case, a latch'bolt in said case, a sliding member movable parallel to the latch bolt, a main latch retracting lever pivoted on the case, a second retracting lever pivoted on said sliding member and adapted to cotiperate with the first named lever, a pin tumbler lock mechanism, and two keys for operating said pin tumbler lock mechanism, one of said .keys beingoperative to actuate said sliding member and to retract the latch bolt, and the other key being operative to retract the latch bolt, but inoperative onsaid sliding member; substantially as described.
2. In a look, a, case, a latch bolt in said case, a sliding member in said case movable parallel to said latch bolt, a tumbler to deadlock said sliding member, retracting levers for said latch bolt, one of said levers pivoted on said sliding member, and the other pivote'd on the case, a thumb-turn member operable from the inside of the room to protract and retract said sliding member, a pin tumbler lock mechanism at the outside of the door, located out of alinement with said thumb-turn member, and two keys to operate said pin tumbler lock mechanism, one key being operative on the same to protract and retract said sliding member, and to retract the latch bolt, and the other key being inoperative on said sliding member, but operative to retract the latch bolt when said sliding member is inretracted position; substantially as described.
3. In a lock, the combination of a case, a latch bolt therein, a deadbolt having upper and lower talons, a tumbler for said dead bolt having projections to cooperate with the respective talons, a retracting lever for said'latch bolt pivoted on the case, another retracting lever for said latch bolt pivoted on the dead bolt, a thumb-turn hub to cooperate with one of the tumbler projections and the corresponding talons of the dead bolt, and a pin tumbler lock mechanism to cooperate with the other talons of the dead bolt and the corresponding tumbler projection, said pin tumbler lock mechanism having two dogs or bits, one of which is inop erative on said dead bolt, but operative to retract the latch bolt when the dead bolt is in retracted position, the other bit being operative to protract and retract the dead bolt and to retract the latch bolt; substantially as described.
l. In a lock, the combination of a case, a latch bolt therein, a dead bolt having upper and lower talons, a tumbler for said dead bolt having projections to cooperate with the respective talons a thumb-turn hub to cooperate with one of said projections and its corresponding talons, a pin tumbler lock mechanism to cooperate with the other tumbler projection and its corresponding talons, and retracting levers for the latch bolt, said pin tumbler lock mechanism having two bits, one of which is adapted to engage one of said latch bolt retracting levers, but to clear the adjacent dead bolt talons and tumbler projection; substantially as described.
