(No Model.) I
H. G. AVERY. INK WELL FOR. DBSKS.
No. 459,433. .Patentedflept. 15, 1891.

UNITED STATES ATENT QFFICE.
HERBERT G. AVERY, OF ALBANY, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO \VALTER M. BROIVN, OF SAME PLACE.
INK-WELL FOR DESKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,433, dated September 15, 1891.
Application filed January 20, 1891. Serial No. 378,424. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. AVERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of 5 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink-Wells forDesks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
: The object of myinvention is to providean ink-well for desks, &c.
Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional viewof a desk-top, a pen-hole through the same, a spring-retaining device, and an ink-well, the
retaining device and the ink-well being arranged to slide back and forth, so as to cause the ink-well to approach and pass under the pen-hole, and to recede therefrom, this figure showing the ink-well closed. Fig. 2 shows a similar view, butshowing the ink-well open-- 1'. e., its mouth directly under the pen-hole. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the retaining device, which consists of aflat spring, formed as shown, having an opening through the same to receive the ink-well, and slots in one end thereof to receive screws or pins or other fastening devices, allowing of the spring and ink-bottle to be slid back and forth.
A full description is as follows: The desktop 1 has apen-hole 2 through it. Under the desk-top the holding device 3, which preferably consists of a flat spring, but which may not be a spring, if desired, is placed and is attached to the desk-top by screws or pins or other holding devices 6, said screws or pins preferably passing through slots 9 and holding the spring in engagement with the desk top, but loosely enough so that the spring may be slid back and forth on the pins, and to accomplish this sliding I form a finger-catch 7 on the end of the spring. Near one end of the spring I form an opening 8 to receive an ink-bottle, said ink-bottle preferably having a flange around its top, as shown, and I form an ofiset in the spring just beyond the bottle, as shown at 5, so that the upper surface of the end 5 will lie level with the mouth of the ink-bottle, but the ink-bottle may not have a flange if desired, and its mouth may not rise above the surface of the spring, in which case the forward end 5 of the spring need not be bent up as shown. The ink-bottle 4 is placed in position preferably by bending the spring down until the bottle can he slipped into the opening 8, and the bottle is I preferably removed the same way; but in case the holding device 3 is not a spring then the screws or pin 6 may have oblong heads, and by turning the heads lengthwise of the slots 9 the heads will slip through the slots and the holding device 3, and the bottle 4 may be removed and put in place again and retained there by turning the heads of the screws or pins crosswise the slots 9; but I do not confine myself to this method of fasten- 7o ing the holding device 3 to the desk and causing it to slide back and forth thereon, as any other means of fastening may be used,
if desired, that will produce the same effect without departing from the spirit of my invention, aslclaim, broadly, a movable fastening device as substantially herein described.
The operation is as follows: The apparatus being in position as shown in Fig. 1, the mouth of the welllies under the desk-top and away from the pen-hole andis covered by the desk-top, and the forward end 5 of the holding device 3 covers the lower end of the penhole 2, and it is thus closed. When it is desired to open the well to use the same, the 8 hand is placed under the desk, the fingerpiece 7 is seized, and the retaining device 3 and bottle 4 are pushed forward until the bottle 4: lies under the pen-hole 2, as shown in Fig. 2. When it is desired to close the well, the holding device and bottle 4 are pulled backward until they assume the posit-ion shown in Fig. 1.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is A desk-top having a pen-1101c through it and an ink-well and holder for the same retained under the desk-top, the holder being arranged to move and carry the ink-well to or from the pen-hole, for the purposes described. [00
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT G. AVERY. Witnesses:

J. MUNHOLLAND.
