DEAD-EYE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,27 5, dated J une 30, 1891.

T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WARREN HENRY CARR, acitizen of the United States, residing atBath, in the county of Sagadahoc and State of Maine,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dead-Eyes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved deadeye. Heretofore dead-eyes have been constructed of a single piece, the holes being simply bored through the body.

The object of my invention is to provide a dead-eye Which shall be very durable and afford very little friction to the lanyards. With these Objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the zo various parts and their combination or arrangement, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved deadeye. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 Of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a somewhat different construction.

In carrying my invention into effect I employ a circular-shaped block or body portion A, of iron or other material, around the eX- terior of Which is produced the annular groove or score a. The block or body is constructed with a plurality Of openings B, the upper sides of Which are concaved, as at b, While the bottoms of the same are made straight and formed with depressions b', as clearly shown. A horizontal bore C is passed 4o through the block and openings from one side to the other, the purpose of which Will appear farther on. Within each opening B is arranged a block D of lignum -vitze, the upper surface of each block being concaved, 45 as at a, to form a circle With the concaved sides b of the openings B. The under surface of the blocks D. is made straight and provided with a projection or tongue CZ', which rests in the depression or recess b', 5o made in the bottom of the opening B. The blocks D are secured in the openings B by means of tie-rod E, which is passed through the bore C and blocks D. A flat metallic band F is adapted to rest in the score a, the

opposing ends of said band being bent upwardly in parallel relation and provided near their ends With the apertures f. A bolt F is passed through apertures in the band and secured by means of the nut f. The shrou'ds are attached to the bolt F. The tie-rod E also passes through the metallic band F, and the Outer surface Of said band lies flush With the outer surface of the block.

If desired, the band F may be omitted and the block A cast with the ears F, which are perforated to receive the bolt F.

From the above it will be seen that I provide a dead-eye which is equally as durable as the one commonly in use, and one which I is far easier to operate, producing less friction and consequent labor.

' Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. An improved dead-eye consisting of a block or body portion having a plurality of openings made therein, and Wooden blocks rigidly secured in said openings, substantially as shown and described.

2. An improved dead-eye consisting of a block or body portion having a plurality of openings, the top of the opening being concaved, the bottoms being 'straight and re cessed, a plurality of Wooden blocks arranged in the openings, the upper surfaces being concaved, the lower surfaces being straight and provided with projections, and the tie-rod, all arranged as described.

3. As an improved article, a dead-eye having a plurality of Openings, each having a concave top and recessed bottom, the blocks of lignum-vitae arranged in the openings, each having a ooncaved top and bottom with aprojection,the tie-rod, the metallic band, and bolt, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
