Description

G. CHAMBERS.
Y Coal Scut'tl. NQ. 45,388.y Patented Dec. `13'. 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE CHAMBERS, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED COAL-SCUTTLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 45,38, dated December 13, 1864.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE CHAMBERS, of the town of Ithaca, in the county ot' Tompkins,in the State of New York, have invented an Improvementin Coal-Scuttles or Coal-Hods;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a f'ull and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
My object is to make a scuttle more convenient for filling the reservoirs of base-burnv ing stoves and cook-stoves and ranges, while it is useful as an ordinary seuttle for common purposes.
In Figure a is the scuttle, and b an inclined false bottom for the purpose of sliding the coal forward to an aperture in the true bttom o zr, which aperture g is opened and closed bythe slide e by means of the rod e and handle f. The tube d d is for the purpose of guiding' the coal into the stove and couveying the dust that may be with the coal Within the draft of the stove.
In Fig. 2 the action of the slide is seen, and the slide made with a flat rod, and also with a round rod, and the concave inclined false bottom removed, the letters referring to parts already explained.
Stoves which are filled through doors in their sides are best tilled by making the aperture y with its slide cin the side of the scuttle near the bottom operating in the same inanner as in the arrangement just described.
The use of the scuttle is by placing the aperture ot the scuttle over the opening' of' the stove, andthe slide is drawn by its handle, and when all the coal has run out, or as much as is desired, the aperture is shut by pushing back the slide. The other uses are apparent to those skilled in the use ot' the article to which it appertains.
I claim- The aperture g, the slide c, with its handle, and the false inclined bottom b, when used in combination as described, and all equivalents thereunto, for the purposes set forth.
Ithaca, Tompkins county, New York, November 25, 1861.
v GEO. CHAMBERS.
