SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,932, dated May 12, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MosEs M. HoLnEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gower, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have in vented a new and useful Equestrian Toy, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to equestrian toys; and the objects in view are to provide a toy in imitation of a race-track, a series of horses adapted to move over the track, and means for continuously moving said horses.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, the central covering-plate removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the vertical operating-shaft, the Winding-drum, the horses, and their supporting-arms.

In practicing my invention I provide a circular base 1, preferably formed of sheet metal, and encircling the base is an annular vertical flange 2, above which is located a horizontal annular rim 3, the edges of which extend at each side of the flange 2. The bottom of the base is provided with a central opening 4, and depending from the bottom and below the base is a cup or cylinder 5. The base is supported upon suitable legs 7, which raise the bottom of the socket above the floor or table upon which the toy is mounted.

S designates a vertical shaft or spindle, the lower end of which is stepped or secured to the bottom of the cylinder or cup, said shaft projecting up through the openingin the base and for considerable distance above the same.

Mounted loosely upon the shaft 8 and loosely fitting the cylinder or cup is a twin drum 9, provided at its upper end with a reduced bearing portion 10, upon which is mounted a disk 11. The bearing portion extends above the disk and is provided with a ratchet-wheel 12. The upper drum of the pair has wound thereupon an elastic strap 13, one end of which is made fast to the drum and the other end passed through the wall of the cup or cylinder and fastened to the opposite leg 7. To the lower drum of the pair is secured the inner end of a string or cord 14,1116 other end of which is passed through an opening 15, formed in the cup or cylinder, and through an opening 16, formed in one of the legs 7. The disk 11 is mounted for rotation upon the bearing portion of the drum and is provided with a spring-pawl 17 for engaging the teeth of the drum when said drum is moved in one direction, and designed to ride over the same when the drum is rotated in an opposite direction. Secured to the upper surface of the disk 11 are two or a series of radiating arms 19, which arms terminate in close proximity to the vertical flange 3. Upon these arms are secured miniature horses 20, provided with miniature jockeys 21 astride the same.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The elastic strap serves to wind the cord upon the lower drum, and by drawing upon the free end of the cord the drum is rotated in an opposite direction. When the drum is rotated by the cord, the teeth or ratchet formed at the upper end of the drum are or is engaged by the spring-pressed pawl, and the disk 11, together with the horses, is moved or rotated, which rotation is continued beyond the time that the cord has been unwound by reason of the impetus given to the disk. By slacking the cord the strap rotates the drum in a reversed direction, the pawl riding over the ratchet and not influencing the disk.
