To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SARAH S. PETE, a citizen of the U ni-ted States, residing at Chi cago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following 1s a specification.

My invention relates to' improvements in toys and has for its object the production of a toy of simple construction and unique and amusing in operation.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferable form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a suitable casing 1 in the center of which is mounted a figure 2 representing a performer. As illustrated, Fig. 2 represents a dancing clown the arms 3 and the legs 4 of which are formed of helical wire springs as shown.

These springs are covered with cloth in representation of sleeves and trousers and miniature hands 3' and feet 4 are secured to the ends thereof. The head of the figure is preferably loosely pivoted thereto so as to be capable of turning when the figure is moved. The figure 2 is supported on wire rods or springs 5 and 6 pivoted at 5 and 6 below floor 1 of the stage portion of the toy and having their upper ends firmly secured in said body as indicated in Fig. 3. The rod 6 has an extension 7 to which is secured an operating cord 8 leading to the outside of easing 1. It will be seen that by pulling upon cord 8 and releasing the same figure 2 will be moved or agitated and at this agitation will be communicated to the arms and legs thereof causing said figure to give an imitation of a dancing clown.

ures being preferably dressed to represent children. Each of said figures is provided with a pivoted arm 10 carried by a shaft 11 traversing an open space 12 in the body of the figure. The lower portion 10 of each of the arms of said figure is composed of a helical wire spring, the whole being covered by cloth in representation of sleeves and provided at the ends with representations of hands. On shaft 11 in said space 12 is secured a ratchet wheel 13 adapted to be engaged by a spring-held pawl 14 carried by an arm 15 pivoted on shaft 11. A cord 16 is secured to the end of arm 15 and serves to rotate said arm and pawl on shaft 11. Pawl 14 is provided with an extension arm 17 adapted to engage a pin 18 upon rotation of arm 14 to trip said pawl to release said ratchet wheel.

A stop arm 19 secured to shaft 11 and adapted to contact with pin 18 serves to limit the operative movement of shaft 11 and arm 10. A helical spring 20 on .shaft 11 serves to yieldingly hold arm 10 in depressed position with stop 19 against pin 18. By this arrangement it will be seen that by pulling upon cord 16 the arm 10 may be elevated until pin 18 trips pawl 14 to release ratchet wheel 13, whereupon arm 10 will be caused to make a movement imitating clapping which will be augmented by the effect of the vibration of springs 10 and the striking together thereof. Each of the cords 16 is led from the corresponding figure over pulleys 21 to a central ring 22 to which it is secured. An operating cord 23 is secured to ring 22 by means of diverging strands 24. Cord 23 leads to the outside of casing 1 as shown and may .be utilized to simultaneously operate said audience figures to imitate applause. Each of said figures is provided with apivoted head which may move slightly thereon and each figure is removably secured in position on a pin 9 so that they may be removed for dressing.

By the construction above set forth it will be seen that the central figure or dancing clown may be operated to give an imitation of a dancing performance and the audience figures operated simultaneously to give an imitation of applause.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into efiect this is capable of variation or modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of such changes and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A toy comprising a suitable casing; a movable figure arranged in the center thereof in representation of a performer; figures arranged around the sides of said casing in representation of an audience, each of said audience figures being arranged to move in imitation of applause; and means for operating said performer and audience figures, substantially as described.

2. A toy comprising a suitable casing; a movable figure arranged in the center thereof in representation of a performer; figures arranged around the sides of said casing in representation of an audience, each of said audience figures being arranged to move in imitation of applause; and means for operating said performer and audience figures independently of each other, substantially as described.

3. A toy comprising a suitable casing; a figure therein in representation of a performer, the said figure being provided with arms and legs composed of helical wir springs; means for imparting motion to said performer; a set of figures in said casing in representation of an audience, each of said figures being'provided with a movable arm the lower portion of which consists of a helical wire spring; and means for moving said arms of said audience figures simultaneously, substantially as described.

4. A toy comprising a suitable casing; a figure therein in representation of a performer, the said figure being provided with arms and legs composed of helical wire springs; means for imparting motion to said performer figure; a set of figures in said casing in representation of an audience, each of said figures being provided with a pivoted arm the lower portion of which consists of a helical wire spring; a ratchet wheel on said arm pivot; a pawl engaging said ratchet wheel; tripping mechanism for releasing said pawl upon movement thereof; a spring adapted to operate said arm; a stop adapted to limit the operative movementof said arm; and means for simultaneously operating all of said pawls, substantially as described.
