Application' ledaJuly 21,1923.
Be itknowni that I, FRANK DONonnroya citizen of United States of America, re siding at lllilmingtoiuin the county of New Castle and State of Delawarmhave invented new and usefuly Improvements in Figure '.lf'oys, ,of which the followingy is a specification. y
This invention relates'to inuirmements in toys and has for am object the previsioni of a toy which will simulate a man' or other ligure` playing a hand organ` or like musical instrument'. y
Another object of the invention-is-the provision of a toy' which. also. includes aI mov*- able iigure representing a monkey on other anin'ial and actuated by the mechanism which actuates the musicahinstrument so asto add to the novelty andv attractiveness of the toy. i i
Another object of the inventionistthe provision ofi atoyfof the above character which is simple in construction, reliable in operation and may be manufactured at a moder-v ate cost. lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accomp zfying drawings and pointed out in the `ided claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a vertical section-al view.
Figure l :is a enlarged. vertical section taken substantially on the line of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a similar View on the line 5-5 of Figure 1. y V
Figure 6 is a. side elevation of the casing or platform, the view looking at the opposite side of the casing from that shown in Figure 1,
Referring to the drawings in detail Wherein like characters of refe-rence denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a casing which constitutes a base or platform having a ligure indicated at 11. This figure represents a man carrying in one hand a cane or stick 12, the other arm being movable at the shoulder as indicated at 13 and at the elbow as indicated at 14.
This figure supports a box 15 and the latter has mounted therein a rotatable shaft SerialI No. 6535040."`
16. Extending radially from the shaft 16 mounted for rotation within the ligure and i the belt or cord passes downward thro-ugh one leg of thefig'ure into the casingwor plat'- form 10. y
Mounted within the casing 10` is a shaft 23 which: isfprovided with a grooved pulley 24sj aroundv which the belt or cord-also passes, while see-uredto the shaft 2.3isone end: ofy a coiled spring 25,-whose opposite'endY is secured tothe casing asindi'catedI at 26. This spring V provides a motori which may be woundzory tensioned` to supply power tl-irou-grh the belt or cord 21 for the rotation of the shaft 16 and the production of musical sounds through contact of the lingers 17 with the arms 18. l
The shaft 23 extends through the casing and is provided with a crank handle 27, whereby the spring 25 may be tensioned, while secured upon the shaft 23 is a ratchet wheel 28 which is engaged by a dog 29.
This provides means for holding the shaft against rotation even though the spring is tensioned. The opposite end of the shaft 23 also extends through they casing 1() and is l provided with a disk 29, while engaging' this disk is a spring tensioned rod 30 which provides su'flicient friction to retard unwind ing movement of the spring 25 and permit the shaft- 23 to slowly operate. vThis friction may be relieved by engaging the upper end 31 of the arm over the top edge of the casing 10. i
Mounted upon the box 15 is a figure 32 representing a monkey, the legs of which are jointed as at 33, while the feet are pivotally secured to the top of the box as shown at 341. Secured to the body of the ligure 32 and extending downwardly through the top of the box is a rodv35, whose inner end is enlarged as at 36 to engage the surface of a cam 37. This cam is mounted uion the shaft 16 so that when the said shaft is rotated the rod will be reciprocated to move the ligure 32 vertically so as to simulate dancing. The monkey or ligure 32 carries a lill) the end of the jointed arm of the figure, so
that as the toy is operated the effect of a man grinding a hand organwill be produced, While the figure 32 will simulate a dancing monkey. l
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is v 1. A musical toy comprising a base, a ligure mounted thereon and shaped tol represent a human figure, a box supported thereby, sound producing mechanism Within the box, a spring motor Within the base, a. motor shaft operatively connected to the sound producing mechanism, whereby the 'lat-ter may be actuated, a movable arm for the figure, means connecting the sound producing mechanism with the arm of the figure `for moving said arm, a movable igure mounted upon the box, means operatively connecting the sound producing mechanism and the movable iigure, whereby the latter may be actuated, a Wheel mounted upon the motor shaft at one side of the base, a rod slidingly mounted upon the base for engaging the Wheel to regulate rotation of the motor shaft, a spring for forcing the rod into such engagement and a lateral extension at one end ofthe rod to engage the base and prevent engagement of the rod and Wheel.
2. A musical toy comprising a base, a hollow ligure mounted upon the base, a boxlike casing extending from the front of said figure and communicating with the interior of the latter, a figure supported by and movable upon the box, sound producing mechanism Within the box, actuating mechanism also located Within the box and operatively connected to the movable figure and to the sound producing mechanism, means connecting one arm of the first mentioned figure to said .actuating mechanism, a moto-r Within the base and means extending through the first lmentioned figure and connecting the motor and actuating mechanism, whereby operation of the motor will move the arm of the first mentioned figure, operate the sound producing mechanism and move the movable figure, all in simulation of an organ grinder and a dancing figure.
.In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANK DONOFRIO.
