ROUNDABOUT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Application filer]. March 27, 1919. Serial No. 285A10.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Josnrrr G. GAVLAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monongahela city, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Roundabouts, of which the follow- -ing is a specification.
This invention relates to roundabouts, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which when operated will be a source of considerable amusement to the riders thereon.
lhe device is designed primarily for childrens use, although it can be used, when desired, by adults and includes means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby it can be operated, revolved, at a desired speed by one of the riders with safety to the persons or riders seated thereon.
Further objects of the invention are to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth a roundabout which is simple in its construction, manually operated, strong, dura ble, amusing when used, readily set up, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure '1 is an elevation'of a roundabout in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, broken away.
Referring to the drawings in oetail 1 denotes a portable base having wheels or rollers 2 conne ted therewith to facilitate the shifting ofthe base when desired.
l inedly secured to the base 1 is a pedestal 3 formed intermediate its upper and lower end with an annular shoulder 42 which forms part of a ball race for the bearing balls 5.
The upper portion of the pedestal 3 is of less diameter than the lower portion thereof, the latter is flanged as at 6 and through which extend securing devices 7 for fixedly connectingthe pedestal to the base 1.
Secured at its lower end in the pedestal 3 is a vertical post 8, which if desired can be attached to its upper end a canopy or awnin 9 to cover the device.
evolving around the upper portion of the pedestal 3 is a sleeve 10, having its lower end forming the other part of the ball race for the bearing alls 5. The sleeve 10 has projecting therefrom a flange 11 upon which is mounted a platform 12, the latter is connected with the flange 11, by the securing devices 18, so that when the sleeve 10 revolves the platform 12 will be carried therewith. T he platform 12 is formed with an opening 14: into which extends the sleeve 10and pedestal 3, and through which projects the post 8.
Secured to the post 8, is an adjustable bearing collar 15, which is formed with a depending flange 16 projecting into the opening it. interposed between the tops of the sleeve 10 and pedestal 3 and the collar .15 are bearing balls 17.
Braceelements 18 extend from the platform 12 to the sleeve 10, and brace members 19 are secured at their lower ends to the platform 12 and to a collar 20 loose on the post 8. The collar 20 is maintained in position by a fixed band 21.
Secured to the upper end of the post 8 is a hand .Qrip or wheel 22 which is grasped by the rider for the purpose of propelling the platform 12 around post 8. Attached to the post 8, below the wheel 22 is a lever and ratchet device 23 for the purpose ofrevolving the platform 12 around thepost 8, if it not be desired to use the wheel 22.
The platform 12- is provided with a plurality of seats 24.
What I claim is A roundabout comprising apedcstal provided approximately centrally with an annular shoulder on the periphery thereof, a base for said pedestal. a sleeve revoluble about said pedestal and having its lower end provided with an upwardly and outwardly extending annular flange positioned below the top of the sleeve, a post secured in and extending upwardly from said pedestal a platform secured to the outwardly extending portion of said flange and having an opening for the passage of the post, bearing balls between the bottom of said sleeve and said shoulder, a depending flanged collar fixed to the post and positioned in said opening, hearing balls interposed between the collar and sleeve and pedestal, and means carried by the 10 post to revolve the platferm.
In testimony Whereoi l afiix my signature.
