Description

Oct. 22, 1929. H. D. CLAYTON KERRY-GO-ROUND me@ may 9. 192s lNvENToR lelberf llllyfon BY I ATTORNEY Patented ct. 22, 1929 UNITED STATES HERBERT D. CLAYTON, OF HILL CITY, KANSAS MERnY-Go-ROUND y AppIication led May 9, 1928.
My invention relates to merry-go-rounds and has for its general object to provide a merry-go-round so constructed and arranged that children can exert a push or a pull to turn the revoluble portion of the structure, the arrangement being such that the children can stand on a platform and operate the merry-go-round whereby they remain cleaner, produce less w'ear and tear on the shoes,
besides providing an interesting and healthful exercise and an attractive recreation.
The nature of my invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will more clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a merrygo-round constructed in accordance with my present invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical section as indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the fixed table at the top of the vertical axle having elements to be grasped by the children operating the merry-go-round.
In carrying out my invention in practice 3o in accordance with the illustrated example, a
fixed vertical axis 10 is provided having suitable means to hold it erect in the ground, there being shown anchoring means forming no part of the present invention. The means 35 shown includes a solid base portion 11 on the axle 10 to be entered into the ground, a casting 12 provided on the axle at the top of the base portion 11, and ears 13 projecting laterally from said axle to which oblique anchor- 4.0 ing braces 14 are attached, none of which parts are herein claimed.
An elongated hub 15 is sleeved on the axle 10, and secured to the lower end of said hub is a collar 16 to which seat arms 17 are suit- 45 ably secured as by bolts 117.
The seat boards 18 are secured to the outer ends of the radial arms 17 by any suitable means here indicated conventionally as securing means 19 which is not claimed herein and 50 which is fully described in an application Serial No. 276,379.
arms 17 and the seat boards 18. lSaid braces are secured at their upper ends to a collar 25 by means of bolts 26, said collar being thrcad- 6o ed as at 24 to the upper end of the hub 15.
A table 27 is ixedly held to the axle 10 to be supported thereby, there being shown a flanged collar 28 held to the mast 10 by set screws 29 in the present instance. A bolt 3() 65 passes through the collar 28, through the table 27 and through a flange of a nipple 31. Into said nipple 31 is screwed a socket 33 for holding a flag-staff A, a fragment of which is shown. On the table 27 are upstanding hand- 70 holds 34 here shown in the form of short vertical posts secured by vertical bolts 35 to the table 27.
A platform 32 on which children may stand is mounted on and carried by the arms 17 adjacent to the hub 15.
With the described construction a number of children may stand on the platform 32 and grasp the hand-holds 34, whereby the children by exerting a push or a pull may so cause the platform 32 with the arms 17, hub 15 and braces 23 to revolve about the axle 10. Thus the necessity of the children exerting a pushin force with the feet on the ground is avoide v I would state furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be 99 considerably varied without departure from the 'spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A merry-go-round including a fixed ver- 95 tical axle, an elongated hub sleeved on said axle to turn thereon, outwardly projecting arms extending from said hub and secured thereto near the lower end of the hub, a central platform on said arms on which children v10o lzo 2 i,7ss,oo5`
may stand, a peripheral platform associated With the extremities of said arms, inclined braces secured to said arms near said peripheral platform, and means on the hub at the upper end securing said inclined braces; t0- gether with a table fixed on the axle above the hub, and a series of members rising from the said table at all sides. Signed at Hill City, in the county of Graham and State of Kansas, this 4th day 0f May, A. D. 1928.
HERBERTy D. CLAYTON.
