AMUSEMENT DEVICE.

This invention relates to an amusement device Oil the type generally known as a carousel or merry-go-round, and contemplates a structure jQl'illltlIllfy intended for use by children, the invention residing in the coiuitriu-tion combination. and. arrangement of parts as claimed.

Referring to the drawings in detail 10 indicates the base of the amusement device adapted to repose upon the ground and held fixed thereto by means of stakes 11 driven into the ground, and attached to the base by chains 12. Arranged centrally oi? the base is a pedestal 13 upon which is mounted the axle or pivot 14. The lower end of this axle or pivot is is formed to provide an annular chamber 15 for the reception of suitable ball bearin 's 16. upon which the hub 17 reposes as clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The annular chamber 15 is also adapted to contain lubricant for the ball bearings 16. The axle or pivot lei is secured to the pedestal 13 by fastening elements 18, which are also utilined to secure the upper ends of braces 19 to the pedestal, the corresponding lower ends of these braces being secured to the base 10 as shown.
Radiating from the hub 17 is a plurrlity of tubular bars 20, preferably gas pipes of suitalde lengths, and these bars 20 have their corresponding inner ends secured in any suitable manner to the annular flange 21 forming part of the hub 17. The bars 20 of course a re horizontally disposed and are connected by rods 21 at appropriate points between the ends of said bars, and as clearly illustrated in Figure 4, the ends of the adjacentrods 21 are curved over the adjacent bar 20, and these ends 22 of said rods are connected together by a bolt or the like indicated at 23.
The bars 20 coi'istitute part of a seat sup porting frame, which also includes a. plurality of tubular bars 24; which have their correspmuling inner extremities secured to an alu'iular flange 25 arranged adjacent the upper end o'llhe hub 17. It will be noted that each oil the bars 20 extend outwardly and downwardly and he o their outer extren'iities arranged horizontally directly above the adjacent bars 20. interposed. between each bar :20 and the adjacent bar 2%]; 1s a strap E26 inchidinp; a curved intern'icdiate portion straddling'the bar 20, and secured to the latter and also to the adjacent end of the bar 24: by means ot a bolt 27. The extremities of the strap 26 project laterally at the opposite sides of each bar 20, and have supported thereon. the adjacent end of a seat 28, the seats being; secured to the straps 26 by bolts or the like 29. The bars 24. also consist of suitable lengths o'l piping and are connected together and. braced by the rods 80, the ends of the adj acent rods being curved about each bar 241-. as indicated at 81, and these curved extrcnt ities areconnected together by belts or other suitable fastening; means in. the same man nor as the extremities of the rods 21 above mentioned and illustrated in Figure l.
In Figure 5 I have illustrated a brake tor the device, which includes a brake band 32, one end of which is fixed, and the other end of which is connected with a link 33 pivoted as at 34;. The free end of this link is connected with a hand operated lever 35 by means of a connecting element 36, so that when the lever 35 is moved upon its fulcrum in one direction. the brake band 32 is con tractcd to stop the device.
In liigure 6 I have shown a modified con-- struction, wherein the brake band 37 has its free end connected with a lever 88 which is pivoted at This lever supports a weight 10 which is adj ustably mounted upon the lever 38 and adapted to be held fixed relatively thereto by means of a suitable pin l1 passed through the weight and one of the openings 42 of the lever. In this form of the inven tion the lever 38 is swung to an active position by the centrifugal force when the device rotates above a predetermined speed, thereby automatically retarding the rotation of the device as will be readily understood. The speed at which the lever 38 is swung to an active position, is ol? course regulated by the zuljustment of the weight at) along different parts of the lever.

It will be manifest that I have devised an amusement device of the class in question, especially adapted for use by children, who
occupy the seats 28, and if it be desired use may be made of the rods 30 in the capacity of handle bars to be grasped by the occupants of the adjacent seats. Of course the amusement device may be rotated by any suitable means, the general construction and arrangement of parts affording the device the desired strength and rigidity.
\Vhile it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood, that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope'oi what is claimed.
What is claimed is:
An amusement device of the character described, comprising'a base, a pedestal arframe, a lever pivoted on said bar, the other end of said brake band being secured to said lever at an appropriate point in its length, and a weight adjustably mounted on the lever and adapted to be positioned to automatically move the lever by centrifugal force to apply the brake at a predetermined speed of said frame.
