AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed April 25, 1928. Serial No.. 272,819.
My present invention has reference to an amusement device, in the nature of a merrygo-round or carousal for childrens use, and
my primary object is the provision of a de tion which ma be chea l manufactured is of a light but strong and sturdy structure, comparatively small and made up of sectlons whereby the same may be erected 111 a childs playroom or set up on a lawn.
A still further object is the provision of an amusement device that embodies a novel means for revolvingthe platform and further wherein the frictional engagement between the platform and the'track is reduced to a minimum.-
To the attainment of the foregoing ob tain other novel features of construction, satisfactory embodiments of which are disclosed by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view approximately on the line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device with parts broken away and parts in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view approximately the line 44. of Figure 1. 7
Figure 5 is an inverted plan view of a modified form of a track which may be employed.
Figure 6 is a sectional view approximately on the line 66 of Figure 5.
. As disclosed by Figures 1 to lathe track,
7 of the improvement may be constructed of wood. The track 18, in this showing, hex agonal 111 plan and is made up of sections which have their beveled ends brought against other. and such means are removably secured by base plates 8 which are bolted or otherwise secured to the track sections. Secured to certain of the track sections, extending inwardly therefrom and disposed at right angles with respect to each other there are plates 9. These plates, at their central and lapping portions are each depressed to pro vide interfitting joints therebetween, and also whereby the faces of the plates are arranged flush with respect to each other. The
plates, of course, Serve as bracing means for the track sections, and the said plates also serve as supports'for a tubular member or sleeve 10 that extends upwardly from the center of said base plates-and through this tube and likewise through the plates 9 there is passed the pivot bolt 11 of the improvement. The sleeve 10 preferably passes through openings in angle metal brace members '12 which have their lower ends removably bolted to the plates 9.
Supported on the plates 9 there is a toothed ring 13 that provides the ratchet wheel of the improvement. The wheel is formed with outstanding flanges 14 which are removably bolted to the plates 9.
The platform 15 ofthe improvement is round in plan, and is constructed of four segmental sections. These sections at their meet-- ing ends are removably bolted to right angularly arranged plates 16 which have their central lapping portions recessed for inter-.
fitting engagement-to arrange the faces of the said plates flush and through the central lapping portions of the saidplates 16 the sleeve 10 is extended. The pivot bolt 11, in the showing of the drawings, has a cotter pin 17 passed therethrough and which pin contacts with the upper end of the sleeve 10, but obviously the pivot bolt may have a nut screwed thereon.
One of the segmental members providing the platform has its inner edge straight and this member for distinction is indicated by the numeral'18. The section 18, adjacent to its inner straight edge is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending opening 19, and the said section 18, in a line with the side walls provided by the opening 19 has bolted thereon the base portions of upstanding brackets 20. Pivotally secured between these brackets 20 by a removable element 21, there is the lower and flat and widened end 22 of the operating handle 23 of the improvement. The part 22 of the handle, of course, passes through the opening 19 and has reanovably pivoted to its lower end the arms of a bail 24. The connecting element for the arms of the bail is designed to engage with the saw teeth provided by the toothed ring or ratchet wheel 13.
On each of the segments providing the platform there are fixed vertically extending supporting plates 25 for seats 26 and the seat upon the platform section 18 1s arranged in close proximity to the operating handle 23. The remaining seats preferably have fired on the outer ends thereof upstandthe occupants of the seats.
Removably fired to and arising from the plateslS there are metal straps 29 and bolted or other-i e lined to these straps there is a ring 30 that atiords both a guard and a ger hold for the occupants of the unprovenient. The upper ends of the straps 29 are bent at inward and upward angles and have thereon the hollow frusto conical top '1 cap 31 of the improvement. 7 a Secured on the under face of the cross plates 16 there are the mounts 88 for small Wheels or rollers o9 which travel on the traclr. The Wheels are journaled in anti-frictional bearings, so that tl e same will freely travel on the track When the operating handle 23 is actuated to revolve the platform on the track.
In Figures 5 and 6 the track 32 is of metal, the segments constituting the same having their ed 'es flanged downwardly, as at 33, and these flanges at theconfronting ends of the segments constitr'itin'g the track are se curedtogether by belts or like removable elements 3% that pass through plates 35, the said plates being arranged upon the inner faces of the flanges. The track has also removably bolted theretoright angularly disposed plates 36 Whose" central and lapping ends are recessed for intertitting engagement to render the faces of the said plates flush and these plates removably support thereon a toothed ring 37, similar to the toothed ring or ratchet Wheel 13. The central lapping portions of the plates 36 are provided With the opening for the pivot bolt. I
My improvement is comparatively small in size, light in Weight and is constructed of sections which permits of the same being readily knocked down so that the device may be arranged in different desired locations and also whereby the device may comprise a small package for storage or shipment. The children are designed to successively occupy the on the platform section 18 and [O manipulate or swing the lever to revolve the platform'on the track so that all of the occupants of the impr vement are thus alforded healthy exercise. The device may be operated with only a small amount of physical exertion on the part of the operator butsuch exert-ion is sufficient to liinber the muscles of the operator and thereby tendv to s Lrengthen the same. 7
WVh1le I have hereln set forth satisfactory tions, reniiovable means connecting the sections and providing a base for the track,
right an ularly disposed brace members hetween the center oi the track, a toothed'ring removably fixed tothe brace members, a pivot passing centrally through the brace members, 7
a sleeve surrenndin the pivot, brace means for the sleeve, platform made up of segn'i'er al sections, angulariy arranged brace members connecting the sections and having central lapping portions which are rec ssed for interengagement and through Which t ne sleeve and pivot passes, removable means for securing the pivot in the sleeve, an upstanding guard fixed on the angle members, elongated seats supported on the platform, a
lever pivotally supported on the platform and extending through an elongated opening therein and dispesed in close proximity to one of the seats and a bail pivotally secured to thelever for engaging with the teeth of the rin 9,. ran amusement evice for children, comprising merry-go-round or carousal, comprising a flat circular track made up of sections, removable'me'ans connecting the secticns and providing a bas c for the track, right angularly disposed brace means between the center of the track, a toot-he'd ring remov'ably tiredto the brace members, a pivot passing centrally through the brace members, a sleeve surrounding the pivot, brace means for the sleeve, a platform madeup of segmental sections, angularly arranged brace members connecting the sections and'ha-ving central lapportions which are recessed for interengagcment and through Which the sleeve and pivotpasses', removable means for securing the pivot in the sleeve,an upstanding guard fixed on the a .ole members, a ring nicmberlixed to the upright of the guard, a frusto conical cap ecurad to the uprights of the guards, elong: red seats supported on the p t orm, a lover pivotally supported on the 1 at l i he seats an tall I secured to the lever for with the teeth o the Ping V HERMAN irrrzn.
