State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amusement devices, and an object of the invention is to provide an amusement device wherein the passengers thereof will experience substantiall the'same feelln as an aviator when performing the fallingleaf stunt in an airplane.
An object of this invention,'is to provide an amusement device comprising a rotary wheel, rotatable about an axis, which wheel has a plurality of shafts carried thereby, radiatingfrom' the axis of the wheel, which shafts carry passenger carrying seats, and also to provide means for rotating these seats radially of the axis of the rotation of the wheel, so that the passengers thereof will assume various positions, during the operation of the amusement device, simulating, to a material extent, the positions occupied by an aviator when looping the loop, or performing the falling leaf.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved amusement device.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the amusement device.
Figure 3 is a detail section through the amusement device illustrating the mechanism for rotating the seat carrying shafts.
Figure 4 is a detail view illustrating one of the passenger carrying seats.
Figure 5 is a detail view partly in section illustrating the mounting of the outer ends of a radial shaft and bearings carried by the rim of the rotary wheel structure.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters indicate like and corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, 10 and 11 indicate the support, each comprising a base 15?. and upwardly extending converging bracing arms which support bearings 13 on their upper ends. and is keyed to one of said bearings as shown at 15', to prevent rotation of this shaft. The tubular shaft 16 is rotatably mounted upon the shaft 14, and this shaft 16 carries the wheel structure, comprising spaced annular rims 17, which are connected by transversely extending braces 18. The rims 17 have spokes 19 attached thereto which connect the rims'to the hollow shaft 16.
- The hollow shaft 16 is connected by any suitable power transmitting mechanism, such as a sprocket and sprocket chain structure 20 to a motor or analogous prime mover 21, for rotating the shaft 16 and consequently the wheel structure about the shaft 14 as an axis.
The shaft 16 is enlarged, intermediate its ends to form a gear casing 22, into which the inner ends of a plurality of radially extending shafts 23, )I'OjQCt. These shafts 23 extend radially of the shaft 16, and have their outer ends journalled in bearings 24 which are carried by the transverse braces 18. The shafts 23 have bevelled gears or pinions 25, upon their ends which project into the easing 22, and these pinions meshwith the teeth of a bevelled gear 26, which is keyed upon. the shaft 14:, so that during the rotation of the wheel structure about the shafts 1 1 as an axis, the radially extending shaft 23 will be rotated about axes radially of the shaft 1 Seats 30. for carrying passengers are attached to the shafts 23, near the outer ends thereof, in such manner that the seats will be rotated with the shafts 23 about their axes as well as about the common axis of the wheel structure. The seats 30 are rigidly attached to the shafts 23, so that the diametrically opposed shafts which extend vertically will have the seats thereof positioned in opposite manner, or in other words, the seats carried by the shafts 23 extending downwardly in a vertical manner from the shafts 1 1 will be in upright position, while the seat- 80 carried by the shaft 23 extending upwardly in a vertical plane from the shaft 14 will. be inverted, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, so that during rotation of the wheel structure the passengers in the seats 30 may be subjected to rotary movement about the common axis of all of the seats, that is the shaft 14:, and also rotary movement radially of the common axis, and about the axis of respective carrying shafts 23; imparting thereto a motion similar to the motions gone through by an aviator when performing the falling leaf in an aeroplane,,and it 1sreadilyapparent that the passengers riding in the device Will experience surprising sensations during the operation thereof.
The seats are preferably upholstered with soft'cushions, 31, to prevent injury to the passengers of the device. Straps .32 are attached to the upholstered side of the back of the seats 30 and these straps are adapted for attachment with buckles 33, carried by the seat structure, and for extending about portions of the body of the passengers to securely strap the passengers in the seats 30 in order to eliminate any liability of accident to the passengers during operation of the amusement device.

I claim:
1. An amusement device, comprising a wheel, a supporting structure including a horizontal axis for vertical rotation of said wheel, seats radially mounted on said Wheel for rotation with respect to said Wheel, and means for vertically rotating said Wheel, and radially rotating said. seats.
2. In an amusement device, a bodyrota table about a central horizontal axis, said body including a plurality of shafts radiat ing from said axis, seats carriedby said radiating shafts, means for rotating said body, and means forrotating said shafts.
