BABY HOLDING AND EXERGISING DEVICE Filed Dec. 4, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet l .WkddeZZ.
ATTORNEY Nov. 17, 1931. o. M. WADDELL BABY HOLDING AND EXERCISING DEVICE 2 Sheets-Sheet ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 17, 1931 UNITED STATES P rE NT OFFICE OSCAR M. WAIDDELL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA BABY HOLDING AND EXERGISING- DEVICE Application filed December 4, 1929. Serial No. 411,661.
My present invention has reference to a baby holding and exercising device, and my object is to produce an extremely simple, cheaply constructed and novel device for this purpose whereby the babymay be securely strapped in a seat so that his feetwill just touch the ground or base of the improvement,-the said seat being pivotally supported to a member which is revolubly received in a socket and which member has an outer angle end to which is adjustably secured a coil spring which is also attached to the socket and whereby the infant will find amusement by traveling around a circle, can swing or teeter on the device and 'otherwlse amuse himself withoutleaving the circular path afforded by the improvement, so that the mother may arrange her chair near the infant'for either rest or work or for the attention of the infant, and further whereaccompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan ment. v
view of the improve- Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof with s parts in section.
1 Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line fir-4 of Figure 3. In carrying out my invention I employ a flat circular base 1, which, however, at a suitable distance inward of its edge is formed with an upwardly inclined portion 2 in the nature of half cone. The central portion of the conical part 2 of the base is formed with an opening therethrough. and this opening is'preferably surrounded by a reinforcing flange. There is passed through the opening a pipe member that provides the socke'tB of the improvement. has an open lower end and is provided with The socket exterior threads adjacent said ends. This end is engaged by nuts 4 which contact with both the outer and inner faces of the conical part 2 of the base, and the said lower opening is also closed by a cap member 5. In this cap member there is arranged a race-way for anti-frictional balls 6 and these balls are in contact with the conical end 7 of a cross sectionally rounded post 8. post, at approximately the center thereof there is a flanged collar 9, and resting on this collar there is a revoluble sleeve member 10. Suitable means may be provided for holding the sleeve from upward movement on'the socket 3, the downward movement, of course, being provided by the adjustable collar 9. p y
The upperend of the post 8 extends a suitable distance beyond that of the socket 3 and the said upper end of the post is centrally slotted, as at 11; This slot receives therein the central flange of a metal T-bar 12, a pivot 13, such as a bolt engaged by a Fixed on the nut passing through the bifurcated end of the post and throughthe depending flange or web of the T-iron 12.
On one of its ends the T -iron has securely fixed thereto a seat 14: for an infant. As
disclosed by Figure 8 of the drawings the seat, from its front, is provided with rounded cut-away portion 15, between which portions thereis extended a reduced portion or web 16 which is formed and which has secured onits upper outer end an upright 17 to which the central bar for the handles 18 is connected. The flanged back and side of the seat isreinforced by a continuous strong wire member 19 which is also connected to the upright 17. e V
The second end of the T-bar or plate 12 1s bent at a downward angle, as at 20, the said end being formed with an outstanding flange or extension 21 whereby the foot of the mother or nurse of the infant occupying the seat may cause the same to turnaround the circular base 1. Through the depending flange 20 there is passed the threaded end of a hook 22. This hook is engaged by a nut 23 which contacts with the outer faceof the angle end 20 of the bar or plate 12; The
hook is engaged by one end of a coil spring 24 of sufficient strength for its purpose and the second end of the hook is engaged by an car 25 that is formed on one side of the revoluble sleeve 10.
The seat 14: is arranged over the straight circular portion 1 of the base so that the infants feet may rest upon this portion of the said base. The infant by moving his feet may thus travel around the circular base. The up and down movement of the infant on the seat will cause the bar 12 to swing against the tension of the spring 24 on its pivot 13. The device does not occupy but a comparatively small space in a room, and it will be apparent that the mother or nurse may be comfortably seated for work, reading, etc.. in close proximity to the improvement. The foot extension 21 on the bar or plate 12 not only provides for the rotation of the said bar but a downward pressure on the said extension 21 permits of the vertical swinging of the bar on the pivot 13, so that when the infant does not feel in a disposition to operate the improvement himself. the nurse or mother may operate the same.
It is thought that the foregoing description will fully set forth the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof so that further detailed description will not be required.
Having described the invention, I claim:
