B. BERNSTEIN.
CORSET PASTENING.
Patented Apr. 28, 1891.

armar BENNY BERNSTEIN, OF NET YORK, N. Y.
CORSET-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,020, dated April 28, 1891.
Application tiled August 20, 1890. Serial No. 362,468. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENNY BERNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county. of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Shoes, Corsets, Gloves, dsc.; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to a fastener; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as and forthe purposes as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accom panying drawings, and forming the subject-matter of the appended claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and secure automatic fastener for use on corsets, gloves, shoes, dto., that may be readily and easily manipulated, and in whichthe parts are so arranged that there is no danger of their working` loose or accidentally becoming unfastened. 4
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the adjoining edges of a corset h aving my improved fasten er attached thereto; Fig. 2, a detail view of the keeper; Fig. 3,- a detail view, in partial section, of the catchbar; Fig. 4, a detail side view of the keeper; Fig. 5, a section of keeper on the line 0o on, Fig. 2; Fig. 6, an end View of the keeper; Fig. 7, a detail view, in partial section, of the catchbar, showing the swivel end thereof as supplied with a spring.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which like letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures, the letter A designates so much of a corset as will sufice to illustrate the application of myimproved fasten er, having formed along its edges pockets in which stays B C are confined in the usual manner, `and to which my improved fasteners, hereinafter described, are secured.
At suitable and regular intervals on the stay B, riveted or otherwise secured, are bars D, provided attheir outerends witha reduced portion d, forming an annular' shoulder d.
The letter E designates a sleeve snugly titpermitt-ed to turn freely thereon. One end of the sleeve E abuts against the shoulder d of the bar D, and is confined on the reduced portion thereof by upsetting the end of said reduced portion, as shown 'at e, Fig. 3. Dependent from the sleeve E and at right angies thereto is an arm F, having secured at its outer or free end a ball F for a purpose presently explained.
At intervals upon the stay C corresponding in position to those on the stay B are riveted ting the reduced portion d of the bar D and or otherwise secured keepers G, which have a general rounded or button-headed configuration or shape and with shank II, by which it -is secured to the stay C by rivet, as in Fig. 4, or saidkeeper may form part of a small plate, and said plate secured to the stay, and formed diametrically in said keeper is a slot II', the bottom of which is preferably made larger than the top, as shown in Fig. 6, and of a shape and size to correspond with the bar D, while the width of the slot at its upper v part is of a size to permit the arm F'to freely pass through.
In order that the arm F, carrying the ballweight F at its end, may not accidentally turn in the keeper and allow the fastener to separate, the keepers G are at their rear portion recessed, as at I, forming a shoulder, under which the arm F rests when the catch-bar is in its keeper, and prevents said arm from becoming accidentally disengaged, and the front edges of said keepers are s o upwardly and rearwardly inclined and beveled, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, that when the bar is presented to the keeper to effect a fastening the arm F 'will be automatically directed in avertical position and enter the slot of the keeper.
\Vl1ile I have shown my fastener attached to a corset, it will be readily understood that it is equally well adapted for gloves, shoes, and various other articles, and, as shown in Fig. 7, a slight longitudinal movement may be given to the arm F relative to the bar D, and a spring I employed to react the parts'.
' To use my fastener as attached to a corset, shoe, glove,`or other article, by directing the end of the catch-bar in the end of the slot II the armF will, owing to the rounded surface of the keeper, be caused to turn and assume IOO a horizontal position and enter the slot. As soon as the arm passes through the slot it will, owing to the ball-Weight on its end, drop parallel to the stays and engage beneath the curved shoulder at the rear of the keeper.
l I do not desire to confine myself tothe precise details of construction herein shown and described, as many minor changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a fastening ot' the nature described, the combination, With the keeper provided With a diametric slot the bottom of which is larger than the top, of a fixed catch-bar having a pivoted arm at right angles to the bar, said bar and arm adapted to enter the slot of the keeper and the arm automatically engage said keeper, substantially as specified.
2. In a fastening of the nature described, the combination, with thekeeper provided with a diametric slot the bottom of which is larger than the top, of a fixed catch-bar provided with a pivoted arm at right angles to the bar having a ball-weight, said bar and arm adapted to enter the slot of the keeper and the arm automatically en gage said keeper, substantially as specified.
3. In a fastening of the nature described,
the combination, with the keeper provided with a diametric slot and at one end with a shoulder, of a fixed catch-bar having a pivoted arm at right angles to the bar carrying ball-Weight, said bar and arm adapted to enter the slot of the keeper and the arm auto` matically engage the shoulder of said keeper, for the purposes specified.
ai. In a fastening of the nature described, the combination, With the keeper provided with a diametric slot and a shoulder, of a fixed catch-bar provided with a sleeve having` secured to it an arm carrying a Weight, said arm adapt-ed to turn and engage the shoulder on the keeper, for the purpose set forth.
5. In a fastening of the nature described, the combination, With the keeper provided with a diametric slot the bottom of which is larger than the top, of a fixed catch-bar having a pivoted arm at right angles to the bar, said bar and arm adapted to enter the slot of the keeper and the arm automatically engage the keeper, and a spring for reacting the parts, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENNY BERNSTEIN.
