DAVID G. RULON, OF MONMOUTII, ILLINOIS.
HANGER FOR PICTURE OR MIRROR FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,496, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed November 8, 1890- Serial No. 370,805. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, DAVID G. RULON, of
Monmouth, in the county of Varren and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hanger for Picture or Mirror Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The objects of this invention are to provide a simple, convenient, and inexpensive device that may be quickly attached to mirror or picture frames of different sizes and aflord means to suspend the frame from a wall and incline it therefrom at any desired angle.
To these ends my invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing exhibits in perspective the complete device in connection with the rear side of a frame of ordinary construction, and adjusted to suspend the frame from a hook or nail in avertical wall and incline said frame at a desired angle.
The device is adapted to be removably attached to the rear side of a frame A, as shown in the drawing; and it consists, essentially, of wire rods bent into form, as will be more fully described.
The suspending clasp B is formed from a single piece of wire, which is bent near its center of length to produce an eye a and then outwardly and upwardly, affording two parallel limbs b, which at b are coiled around a horizontal stay-rod O, and thence upwardly extended. The eyes a are formed 011 the limbs b at a proper distance above the rod 0 and near these eyes a series of return-bends. are produced on each limb that form ratchet-- racks (Z, above which the hooks e are formed on the terminal ends of said limbs 12. A spiral spring D is secured by a hook formed on one end to the eye a and at its opposite end in like manner to the upper looped end f of a link E, the lower end of said link having a looped engagement with a hook piece or clasp F, which is bent from a single piece of wire, so as to afford an eye g, to which the link E is attached, and two limbs, which are,
spread apart, as shown, and terminate in hooks 71, that are bent in the same direction.
Upon the end portions of the stay-bar O, that project beyond the coils b of the limbs b, the ends of a wire prop-piece Gare wrapped and then secured to the limbs b, said .proppiece preferably consisting of a wire rod bent at i t' to produce a cross-bar 7c and two limbs m, that are connected with the stay-bar and limbs b, as stated. At point-s equally distant from the corners i on the prop-piece G ringeyes it are formed in the limbs in. The eyes a are loosely engaged by the trunnion ends 0, which are oppositely projected from and are the terminals of a rocking brace H, that projects from the prop-piece Gr toward the ratch et-racks cl. The brace H consists of a wire rod bent twice at essentially right angles to form the crossbar 0 and limbs 0 the ends of which are bent toform the trunnions 0. The cross-bar 0 of the brace is adapted to engage opposite teeth of the racks and hold the prop-piece inclined outwardly from the frame A, the adjustment of the brace H upon the racks cl giving different degrees of angular projection to the prop-piece G.
A strand of wire I is provided for the suspension of the entire device, which is conneoted by its ends to the eyes 0, said strand being doubled at p, where it may be hung upon a hook or nail in a wall and retain the frame A suspended therefrom, when the hanger device is secured to the frame. This is preferably effected by expanding the spring D and hooking the hooks e it upon the ledges A, that are provided on alarge proportion of frames as ordinarily manufactured. I When the ledges A are omitted from a frame, the holder-wires 5 may be utilized to retain the hanger in connection with the frame A, said wires being fastened at their ends to knobs s, which are attached to the frame, so that an extension of the spring D will allow the hookseh to catch upon the holder-wire strips .9 and fasten the hanger on the frame which is to be suspended.
By providing a few different sizes of the improved hanger a large range in size and weight of picture or mirror frames may be safely and expeditiously connected therewith,
and in case the hanger is strong enough but too short for a frame the insertion of a longer link E will render the device available to engage frames of disproportionate length.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A frame-hanger comprised of two furcated clasps having hooks on the ends of their limbs which will engage projections from the rear side of a frame, a spring and a link intermediate of the clasps and loosely connected thereto, a prop-piece loosely secured to one clasp and adapted to project at an angle therefrom,'and a hanging cord or wire strand, substantially as set forth.
2. In a frame-hanger, the combination, with a furcated clasp having hooks on the ends of to the limbs of the upper clasp, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a frame having projections on its rearside, of a hanger therefor comprised of a clasp having two limbs which are serrated and have hooks on their ends, a spring on the clasp, alink on the spring, a lower "clasp 0n the link having limbs with hooks on their ends, a stay-bar on the upper clasp, a prop-piece on the stay-bar, a rocking brace on the prop-piece which engages with the serrations of the clasp-limbs, and a hanger cord or wire on the limbs of the upper clasp, substantially as set forth.
DAVID G. RULON.
