NITED STATES GAYGER D. TOLMAN, OF SHAWANO,
WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND LORENZO D. ROBERTS, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING HAT AND COAT RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.385,153, dated June 26, 1888.
Application filed March 10, 1588.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAYGER D. TOLMAN, of Shawano, in the county of Shawano and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Folding Hat and Coat Rack, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to folding hat and coat racks, and has for its object to provide a convenient hat and coat rack which may be readily folded up in a compact space.
The invention consists in a folding hat and coat rack constructed and arranged as here inafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lillustrates theinvention in extended position for use. Fig. 2 shows the invention folded up. Fig. 3 is a side view; and Fig. 4is a detail, with parts broken away, illustrating the joint for holding the main portion of the hat-rack in open position.
This hat and coat rack is preferably made of wire to form a light, serviceable, and cheap frame, and is constructed with a main frame, 1, formed with a rear side, 2, extended sides 3, front portions, 4, and a central curved portion, 5. The latter is braced by means of a wire, 6, having its ends bent about and fastened at 7 to the curved portion 5,and bent about the rear side, 2, of frame 1, and extended upward to form a square projection, as at 8.
To the side 2 of the frame 1 are pivoted a pair of hooks, 9, made of a singlepiece of wire bent to form the V-shaped portions 10, having their ends bent around the rear side bar, 2, at 11 and 12. The bent portions 12 extend up to form the projection 13, which is adapted to abut against the vertical projection 8,the lat; ter therebyserving as astop forswinging movementofthehooks9whenthelatterareunfolded. The sides 3 of the main portion 1 are provided with double hooks lei, formed of a single piece of wire secured to the side bar, 3, by bending their ends 15 and their central portion, 16, about the same, as shown.
To support the frame 1,side frames, 17, are
employed, consisting of a singlepiece of wire Serial No. 266,890. (No model.)
bent to form a loop, 18, and connected by one bent end at 19 about the rear of the side bar, 3, and by the other bent end at 20 to the forward part of side bar, 3. The side frame, 17, further consists of a brace-bar, 21, secured by one end, 22, to one of the vertical bars of frame 17, and by a bent wire, 23, to the other vertical bar of frame 17, the wire 23 being preferably soldered thereto. The brace-rods 21 extend outward from the frame 17 ,and are formed with a curved end, 24, which serves as a hook to suspend a hat by. The hat and coat rack may be suspended from a wall or suitable support by means of the loops 18 of the side frame en gaging nails, hooks, or other projections.
It will readily be seen that by means of the loop-connections of the side frame and the I hooks to the central frame,1, the parts maybe folded up,overlapping each other, and will be in compact position for transportation.
The main frame 1 serves as a shelf, upon which hats may rest, and overcoat-s and other garments may be suspended from the hooks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A folding coat and hat frame, consisting of a shelf formed of wire upon which hats may be placed, side frames hinged thereto, with lodps to attach them to nails or other supports, and hooks pivoted to the rear and sides of the shelf, the several parts being constructed of wire and adapted to be folded up together, substantially as described.
2. A combined hat and coat rack, consisting of a shelf formingasupport for bats, and having folding double hooks pivoted to its sides and rear, and folding side frames with extended brace hook arms, and looped ends adapted to be attached to nails or other retaini n g devices, the several parts being formed of wire and adapted to be folded up together, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a shelf forsupporting hats, formed of a single piece of wire and having a rear wire brace with vertical projection, of double hooks formed of a single piece of wire pivoted to the rear of said shelf, and having an extended portion adapted to bear against the vertical projection at the rear of the shelf, double hooks formed ofa single piece of wire pivoted to the shelf, and having braced hook-arms and suspending-loops, the several parts folding together, substantially as described.
4. A folding hat and coat frame, consisting of the shelf 1, having folding side frames, 17, with loops 18 and brace-arms 21, with hooks 24, folding double hooks 9 and 14, the frame 1, having brac'ewire G, with vertical projee tion 8, and the hooks 9, having extended p01 :0
