SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,826, dated February 17, 1891.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT C. 'VIRT, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Detacha-ble Ceiling Blocks or Brackets for Electric-Lamp Fixtures, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

1o fIhis invention relates to electric cut-outs of that class in which a cap or rosette is detachably secured to a base, and has for its object to effectively combine with the said cap or rosette a bracket, preferably a hollow rod,

to which one or lnore incandescent lamps may be secured.

The-particular features of my invention will be pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.

In accordance with this present invention the cap or rosette has secured to it a bracket, preferably a hollonT brass or other metallic rod b, having attached to it an electric incandescent lamp b of any usual or wellknown construction. The bracket I) and its attached lamp may be designed to hang suspended from the cap or rosette so as to swing 4 5 in a circle, and to effect this result the cap or rosette is provided with an enlarged hole or opening b2, through which the end of the bracket b is extended up into the cap or rosette, where it is provided with a ball or rounded collar b3, provided at one side with a projection (shown as a screw) bwhich extends into a slot or groove b5 in the cap or rosette, the said ball or collar being herein shown as screwed upon the said bracket. The cap or rosette is also provided with an annular ledge c, upon which is secureda plate c', preferably of insulating material, to 6 n which are secured the contact-arms ct'L and contact-plates c3 c4, to which are secured the branch wires c5 c, connected to the electrodes of the lamp. The collar or ball b3, co-operating with the rounded edge of the rosette, forms practically a universal joint, whereby the electric lamp may be turned to occupy various positions from a vertical, as occasion may require.

By securing the bracket to the cap or ro- 7o sette of a cut-out, as described, not only is a stronger support afforded for the lamp, but one cap or rosette having but a single lamp attached to its bracket may readily be removed and another cap or rosette with a bracket having two or any other number of lamps may readily be secured to the base a.. Thus it will be seen that for all practical purposes the bracket is rigidly secured to the cap or rosette. 8o

I prefer to employ a cutout constructed as above described, having the contact-arms extended outside the cap; butI do not desire to limit myself in this respect, as the bracket b maybe combined with a rosette having its 8 5 contact-arms on the inside.

I claim- The combination, with a base and a cap or rosette detachably secured thereto and provided with an opening b2, of a bracket b, ex- 9o tended up into said opening and provided with a ball or collar h6, an incandescent lamp secured to the opposite end of the bracket, an insulated support c within the cap above the opening b2 and provided with terminals, 95 and branch wires connected to the lamps and extended through the bracket and secured to said terminals, substantially as described.
